TR2/3/3A TR3A 10 inch rear brakes

When my differential packed it in I pulled the brakes off taking it off the car. I have the 10 inch drums on the rear. It turned out that one of the axle seals had gone bad and I oiled down one of the shoes really badly, so it is time to get new shoes.
The 10" shoes seem to be hard to find. How hard would it be to switch over to the 9" brakes. The reason that I ask is because I have a pair of Alfin 9" drums that I would like to use.

Test fit the 9" drums. Compare the springs, brackets and misc pieces between the 10" and 9" setup. If all you have is the drums you need to find someone with the 9" setup and compare parts. My guess is a complete 9" system should be adaptable. One possible exception is the emergency brake. Depending on the location and the method of attaching the cable to the actuator.
 
I know that the brake adjusters are different between 10" and 9" drums. I'm not sure about some of the other "little bits" of the system.

An alternative solution would be to find a local shop to reline your current shoes. You might even be able to send them to Ted Schumacher and have them relined with Kevlar linings.

All that seems a lot easier than making a relatively major swap just to accommodate a pair of drums...unless, of course, they are genuine, original AlFin drums and not just modified Datsun 240Z drums! :smile:
 
I too have the hard-to-find 10" shoes and have located (but not yet had to use) a local source for relining. Not as common a practice as it once was but checking with places that service big trucks got me a couple of names.
 
I need to check some of the truck shops locally to see about getting a reline done on the shoes I've got now. I never thought about that idea.

It agravates me that I bought those drums and didn't even think about the two different sizes. Guess I'll have to sell them to someone with 9" brakes. The wife is starting to clamp down on my "spare parts" inventory so I can't add many more treasures to it.
 
Yes I have the 10 inch also. I had them relined at a local shop in town for 25.00 bucks a shoe. You could swap them out for 9 inch but you need the back plate and the adjustors and the drums and the springs and hold downs….Once I actually converted a 9 to a 10…

I have kept some spare parts (most of a parts car TR3) for over 20 years and never used any of them. I am afraid that after all this time I am going to go with your wifes side on this. Sell them. That is what I have started to do and it feels good to have the extra garage space. One day I iwill fill it with something fun and the war department should not mind:smile:
