Donnie, those 3 x metal threads per side joining the staunchion to the windscreen frame have been the source of many broken windsceens. If one hits the edge of the glass, it's goodnight nurse.
Originally, at least on the early cars, there was a thin strip of rubber between the tenon plate and the windscreen frame. It served as a waterproofer and a spacer for the staunchion metal threads. The factory windscreen drawings didn't show it and it's never been offered as a spare part.
The roll of glazing strip they supply (Moss 680-455) is fairly useless for the windscreen, as it won't sit neatly around the top radiused corners. However, at 1mm thickness, it's ideal between the tenon plate and windscreen frame. Any rubber up to about 2mm thickness will do though.
On post TS60000 cars the staunchions were bolted hard against the body. Not good for paintwork. As Steve said, they're usually a tight fit. I've used duct tape as a thin cushion, stuck to the back of the staunchion. It's a fiddly job, but helps.
