I've not measured it accurately, but it's around 3/8" to 1/4". You're right, you can strain the mounts that far (especially if they are a bit older), which is what I did on my first conversion as well. But I always had a hard time keeping mounts in that car, and I think the length difference is one of the reasons why. When I did it again, I elongated the holes in the rear cross member by about 1/4", so the mount lined up, and never had another mount failure.
