When a trunnion is replaced, and everything else is OK with the front end ,should there be any play in the front wheel if the car is jacked up and you grab the wheel from the top and bottom and wiggle it? In other words should there be any movement there?

Only a very small amount, practically undetectable.

Unless you've followed the original workshop manual and set the bearings to 1-1/2 to 2 flats loose. That will leave enough play to notice. The later manuals say only 1/2 flat.

On my 59, I eventually traced the play to the spindle being out of round where the inner race of the outer bearing fits onto it.

My '60 had the wrong bearings installed...they were larger than the spindle. Gotta love PO's. We'd have nothing to do without 'em!
