TR2/3/3A TR3 Trunk Flooring

What can you all tell me about TR3 trunk floors? I ordered a trunk floor that I thought was correct replacement for my pre 60K TR3A. What I received looks different then the trunk floor currently in the car. The truck floor replacement I received had "raised horizontal ribs" (I don't know they're called). The floor it is replacing has "sunken horizontal ribs". What gives?

Sounds like you have a post 60k floor. The post 60k floor is also 'raised' in the center curved section by about 3/8" from the outer sections, whereas the pre 60k floor is basically level all the way across. They did that to accomodate 165 size tires.

You're looking at it upside down?

These are from TS 81551 L.

Don:

Your trunk floor is similar to the one I was sent (no I was not holding it upside down!). In particular, you can clearly see in your picture the ribs are sticking up (I see three ribs in your picture). When did the change take place for these ribs to be sunken rather then stick up? My car is Comm # 53087 (pre 60K). Would it be "legitimate" or feasible to put this earlier trunk floor (like the one in your car) on my car?

More then anything, I just want to make sure I'm not putting a later model trunk flooring on my car. I've noticed that there has been more then one situation on my car where it had an earlier model body panel on it (maybe they ran out of that certain panel on the day it was produced in the factory..who knows).

Also, are the elbowed pieces of sheet metal you have on your trunk floor original? The strips of sheet metal would obviously be used to fix the fiberboard backing that hides your gas tank.

Thanks
John

....I just caught my error. Your car is post 60K. If my trunk floor looks like yours, I likely have the post 60K floor and just put it on my pre 60K car....errr.

No one will ever see it. It'll be under the floor carpet in the trunk if any concours judge looks at it. Last July at VTR, we were told that we didn't need to open out trunk doors. TRA judges want it open but they can't see under the carpet. And you'll have more space for your spare.

To answer your question about the green TR3A, I MIG welded in extra supports so that the rear interior panel that hides the fuel tank would be supported more rigidly.

BTW, that green one is not mine. It's one I did for a TR owner in Toronto. Mine is a pre 60K black 1958 TR3A (TS 27489 LO). Here is the trunk in mine last spring as I was getting it ready for a total re-spray. The supports for the rear panel and the floor are the ones that came with the car new in 1958.

Was there a different kind of floor in between your trunk (shown in black) and the trunk floor of post 60K car (in green)? Unless your black trunk is an optical illusion, I swear the trunk ribs look to be sticking up (convex). Again, the originals I pulled out went the other way (concave).

To my knowledge, there was not another "original" design used for boot floors during TR2, 3 production. What Don has shown for the post TS60000 BRG 3A and his own, pre-TS60000 Black 3A are correct. Here is a photo of my boot floor during repair. This is TS58476 LO.

Is it possible that you have an aftermarket floor that was welded in at some point in time?
