TR2/3/3A TR3 trunk bulkhead install

Hey guys,

I picked up a new gas tank cover to finish my trunk. My car never had one, so I have no template to go off of. I tried fitting it in on Sunday, but didn't seem to fit easily (of course). I noticed that the bottom edge of the piece is scored about 3/4" from the edge. I'm assuming this gets folded forward (towards rear of car)??

Anyone have experience putting one a repro one in? Detailed pics?

Re: TR3 trunk bulkhead install- Get your bits out!

Sorry to reignite this thread, but I've done a lot of google image searching and can't find any detailed photos of installed gas tank cover.

Someone must have a trunk they're proud of... Pics please!!

Re: TR3 trunk bulkhead install- Get your bits out!

I had the same problem when installing mine. I folded it at the score mark with the resulting lip facing the rear. It was still a snug fit top to bottom. The piece has a decided inward curve to it once installed. Also, I had to trim the sides a bit where they mated with the wheel wells. Whether the fold is right I don't know, because I didn't have an original, but it made sense. I can take some pics when I get home tonight.

Re: TR3 trunk bulkhead install- Get your bits out!

My original one was made of 1/4" thick masonite with a "leather-textured" finish. It came flat but it bowed in a bit after 15 years where my tool box was pushing it inwards and during the period 1959 to 1965, about 15,000 miles was done in competitive rallys. It never had a lip on the base. When I did my restoration from 1987 to 1990, I replaced it with a new "repro" and it came bowed, but it lad no lip or flange along the bottom. It was made of some kind of cardboard with a textured finish. This cardboard one was about half as thick as my original masonite one.

I know one owner who made his own from a piece of sheet aluminium about 3/16" thick and he covered it with a sheet of black textured vinyl that he glued on. It doesn't bow and looks perfect.

I too would like to see pictures. This is a topic my father and I have discussed several times. The "trunk board" and the interior piece that rests against the gas tank are the two pieces we have virtually no knowledge of. We're unable to find templates or originals (so far).

rlandrum -- if you find yourself in Silver Spring, MD, do let me know, and I can supply you a pattern.

Thanks!
Matt

Rlandrum, I can give you one, too. You can use it as is or use it for a pattern.

I might have an original or an old reproduction I am not sure. I will see what it looks like and take a picture if it is halfway decent.
