I have never checked the fluid level on my transmission and thought it was time. I have read many posts about a dip stick, I'm not sure mine has one. Attached is a photo of the right side of the tunnel looking in on to the top of the transmission, there is a brass nut that I can see. I'm not sure I can reach wihout removeing the tunnel.

Russ- you are looking too far to the left side. Look straight down from the hole, you may see I think a black plug - pull if you have it, dipstick will be attached.

actually, if you just see a round aluminum boss immediately underneath that hole you don't have the dipstick

I think, for what its worth, that what you are seeing is a plug where one of the overdrive switches would go if you had an o.d. transmission.

If you look straight down through the hole, you should see a raised boss similar to the one with the bolt in your picture, but without being drilled for the dip stick. That is where the dip stick would go if you wanted to drill and add a dipper.

I think there has been discussions in previous threads on how to that.

Without the D.S., checking and filling the transmission is accomplished through by removing the pipe plug on the drivers side of the trans located about halfway up the trans. There is a similar plug on the bottom for draining the trans. You have to pump the new up and into the trans unless your tunnel has a rubber plug like the one you have already removed.

Jim it looks like you are correct, there is no dip stick. It will need to be drilled out and added. I'll search for the thread on that subject.

That's a fair size hole. I took the top cover and dip stick to a machine shop and had them drill it to fit.
 
Just to be clear, the dipstick was deleted at TS50,000, and a plug put in the side of the gearbox for filling and checking level (from underneath the car). Less convenient for sure, but a lot less likely to spill oil on the carpet, too.

But I wanted to keep the dipstick when I installed a TR6 gearbox, so I rebuilt the TR3A top cover with the shafts & forks from the TR6. Now I have the best of both worlds.
 
Thanks Richard and Randell, I think I'm going to look for a top cover with a dip stick.
 
The plug to check the gearbox fluid level is on the other left side of the tunnel...
