On my TR3, the yellow fan fits backwards on the stock crank extension. It might just squeak in right-way-'round, but it was too close to call when I was assembling the car. In any event, I was still planning to use the wide fan belt at the time, and there would be no way at all to install one on the car with the fan that close to the radiator. Actually, I don't think one could install a narrow belt on my car, were the fan facing forward.
With it on backwards, it barely clears the frame cross tube -- but it does clear. While the narrow fan belt easily fits between the rad and the fan -- a wide one would too -- it involves some trickery and engine rotation to get a narrow fan belt through between the cross tube and the back of the fan. It took me a little time to establish the technique, but it works.
