Is there any differance between the convertible top bows for post 6k body vs.pre 6k,say a 1958 TR3 body?Still sorting project parts.
Thanks
Tom

I don't think there is, but hopefully someone else can confirm. If there is a difference, I'm in trouble because my bows will be mismatched.

Tom,

Pretty sure they are the same. Can't think of a reason why they wouldn't work anyway. All I know for sure is they can pinch the &*#) out of you hand if you don't watch what you are doing when you put the top up.

Randy and Marv, thanks for the replys.Thats good news as the one I have I dont think is original to my car.
Thanks again,
tom

Hoodstick metal parts were the same from TR2-TR3B, but there was a range of colours and six different webbing shades. Repainting them all black with black webbing has been the easiest solution for cars I've rebuilt.

Viv.

Viv,thanks.
Bows that came with car are red, but pics of car before resto started by po show different bows that were black.
I will repaint black,to match future black interior.
Steve of Triump Classics in New Paltz Ny gave me what he said was a roll of nos webbing that is tan, with a slight greenish tint.I will probably use black webbing though, and have seen some hold down straps that look about right, but thats farther down the road.

Easiest and cheap is std seatbelt material. I've used it for just about all my cars even the XKE. Bends right into the black tops. I bought a big roll of it years ago. Its getting smaller! If memory serves me right, most of the bows were painted a tan color but paint it the color you want.

Marv

My original bows from TS23xxx were painted red, and I used them on the post 60k body that I mounted on the frame. They fit fine...I painted them black however.

I have read that the bows were supposed to be painted body color? I'd rather do black cause it sure would be easier. The original color on my car was red and the bows are painted red. It is a post 60K car.

FYI- While rummaging thu parts yesterday I found at least 4 sets of frames that were painted a tan color, did find a couple that were black.

Marv

Straps were black but pretty sure the frames had been repainted sometime in the past and straps replaced. I did see some light colored straps. Think the material was just faded.

I have an original unrestored 1961 white TR-3A, 68,000 miles, top straps are straw or tan color, tan top bowes, black top, black interior. Bill C. Mesa, Az.

Marv,Thanks.
Bill, that fits with the few black interior unrestored cars I have seen, but Tinkemans post said he read that they were supposed to be painted body color.
My red ones dont appear to have been repainted, remnants of tan straps..
Viv's post got me curious about the Six shades of straps. Were they six shades of tan-dark tan to white,or different colors?
Maybe I will just use the nos tan straps I have.
Also what color tops were available Black,White and Tan?
Thanks
Tom

C. Hoodsticks - The hoodstick assemblies fitted to all cars were essentially the same, variations, if any, being insignificant or unnoticeable. On nearly all cars, the hoodstick assemblies and hoodstick mounting screws were painted the color of the body of the car. Some very late cars may have had their hoodsticks painted black, or a
buff (semi-gloss tan). Do not deduct for very late cars with black or buff hoodstick assemblies. Most early cars seem to have had a strip of buff moquette (essentially furflex) glued across the top half of the front hoodstick bow. This strip extends only across the center section of the bow, between the webbing. It is uncertain when this was discontinued. Do not deduct for the absence of this strip.
D. Hoodstick Webbing - Most cars had hoodstick webbing of a natural, or tan color, although part numbers are listed for early cars to match the early top colors. The webbing on all cars was a cotton weave of varied detail.

IN-10
Do not deduct from cars fitted with cotton webbing dyed to match the top (early cars only), natural (tan), or on later cars, black. The hoodstick webbing attachment plates may be either painted black, or natural metal.

Tom, hoodstick webbing colors were originally listed as Geranium, Fawn, Ice Blue, Pearl White, Black, Brown and Blackberry. After some of the early TR2 body colors were dropped, webbing thereafter was mostly fawn which matched vynil soft top backing material of the era.

Black soft tops these days have black backing material so all black hoodsticks and webbing blend in well. But if I had a car with a white soft top I'd use fawn for the hoodsticks and webbing.

Viv.

Both are now gone, but I used to own TS71909L (built 3/28/60; green with -- original, I think -- green hoodsticks) and TS73624L (built 4/15/60; originally white with -- again original, I think -- "sandlewood" tan hoodsticks). I owned both for a long time, but neither one from new, so I cannot say for absolute certain that both had the original hoodsticks. But I've long wondered if the change to the "tan hoodsticks for all cars" might have started around the end of March or beginning of April 1960?
