This may be a silly question, but I've never let that stop me before. I'm in the process of refitting the top bows to my TR3. They have always been a very tight fit, so tight that I've never been able to get the bows to tuck in under the rear deck without risk of damage to the interior panels. I did some measuring today and discovered that the top bows measure almost exactly 45" from outside to outside of the mounting brackets. The interior panels are almost exactly 43" apart. Should there be that much difference? I'm tempted to take the top bows to a welder and have an inch or so taken out of the middle.

Don't cut 'em. They may be "flattened" a bit, but they are the right length if they are, indeed, TR2 - 3B Bows. They are a tight fit. you have to spring 'em a bit when installing them. Also, they never fold completely inside the rear cockpit cap. One of 'em always rests on top of that -- covered by your tonneau or bow cover -- or not...
 
You might also find that the interior panel , if there are no screws presently in are bowed towards the inside of the car. The other thing as far as where the top bow in the folded position sits is what position the bracket is in. I would jockey it back and forth to get the best position.
