TR2/3/3A TR3 Tire Straps

I've confused myself (again). For the spare tire and tool kit straps...which way do the buckles mount? I know I've seen another thread about this...but can't seem to find it when I need it...!

Interesting...I had convinced myself the buckle had to go on top, to keep from scratching the paint when it was unlatched. Glad I asked!

Also, the tool strap I received is only a single strap, with the buckle a couple inches along the strap. It is long enough to loop up through the retainer bracket and then double back to the buckle. Was that an option for some years?

Very nice photo. Did you know that TRA and VTR do not judge this area with the spare lid off? They don't require it open. So I have the original straps on the right side and none for the wheel. With the 165 tire, I found I needed the space to get the spare out. Otherwise I would have to totally remove the tire straps to have enough vertical space to slide the tire out.

When you think of it, where can the tire go anyway? I insert the tire with the steel rim dished down and I carry the jack, the ratchet and wheel nut remover, a small battery charger, a spare control box, a spare fuel pump plus other stuff in the deep-dished rim. Along the left side I carry a spare generator and on the right, some other items. These items are all bagged not to get scratched or to scratch the paintwork in the steel rim or the wheel well.

I'm not too worried about losing the $100 tire...its the $1000 cover that scares me. The straps should be on that!

Keith: The white car is actually silverstone grey. It belongs to a fellow from PA who I met at a car show a few weeks ago. I was asking him about the same area of the rear apron, boot and spare tire compartment. He emailed me this photo and diagram from the spare parts catalog.
