to shaft...what size is this nut 1" 11/8 or some obscure Whitworth size? and how in the world would you torque that sucker there's barely room for a wrench let alone a socket!
 
Has to be done with the box off the car, IMO. Don't recall the size offhand, but I had an SAE socket that would fit it. 1-3/16" maybe?

If you're working on the car, don't forget that there is a lock tab (which should be replaced) turned up against one flat of the nut.
 
What you want is a friend who is an engineer helping you with your car. What he will then do is take his 15/16AF Britool spanner, grind the jaws open to 1 1/16 inch, cut the handle down to 7 inches and then grind the jaw so that it is 1/4 wide. That way you will have a tool that will fit the nut perfectly while the steering box is still on the car. Your friend will also tell you not to worry about over-tightening the nut as it is pushing the steering arm onto a tapered splined shaft.
I have such a friend and this is what he did for me! His name is David and I am sure if you paid his flights and accommodation he would come and do the same for you!!
