TR2/3/3A TR3 Steering Box

Hello folks,
Well, I'm almost on the road - but we've found one more thing that needs fixing before the car will pass out Ontario Safety - its the steering box. The only guy around here that sells them wants $600CAD - seems awfully high. So a couple of questions, am i being robbed? Should i try and rebuild mine (or have it done) Also, are these worth buying used or should i stick to rebuilt - i am worried that i may end up with another that is as dried up as mine.
Thanks in advance,
Cheers,

Kerry - What does he say is wrong ? If it's too sloppy, it may be that you need to adjust down on the peg on the top cover of the steering box. I adjusted mine several times but then it got too tight at the extreme ends or locks. So I put in a kit that comes with an adjustable peg. It's spring loaded so it does its job at the center, but near either extreme lock, the spring in the peg compresses to still give a nice feel. Maybe the MOT guy has not driven a TR3A and he thinks it should feel like a modern car with rack and pinion steering.

Herman Van den Akker in California makes and sells the kit. He doesn't list them, but ask anyway.

Hi Kerry do you know the exact reason why they felt the steering box is defective. It might just be that it is leaking gear oil. In that case, you might be able to fix that with a miracle in a can. I head of one of the members doing that. If it was leaking only, what I would do is take some household cleaner and clean it up real good to ascertain the origin of the leak. There are about four places that it can leak from and three of them are easily and cheaply fixable while the box is still in the vehicle. If the gear itself is bad you would be better off having yours rebuilt. But again, the steering box is one piece in the steering system and often the other components are the problem. I would be very impressed to hear that they were able to pin point a mechanical problem in the steering box without tearing the whole system down.

Thanks for the advice - I spoke to a few folks - the history is that the box was bone dry when initially checked - we filled it and let it sit, but things are still too loose (the MOT guy is in fact used to old cars) - the reason for the initial suggestion was that the threads on the box for the pin were stripped off and until we realized how much a new box costs we were just going to replace the whole unit instead of repair - since my supplier suggested that more than likely a new pin would tighten things up sufficiently we will try and repair the box- sooo close to getting this thing on the road...Cheers, will keep you posted,
Kerry
