TR2/3/3A TR3 softtop install

I need some help/advice on installing the new softtop on my TR3. This install is compounded by the fact that I am also installing new headsticks.

When I got the car, the headsticks were from something else, maybe a TR4. When folded the hang all the way back to the gas cap. I need to have some idea of the spacing for the webstraps, then how to install the top.

Suggestions anyone? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif before /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Hi, Glenn -

When I did my top, I measured between the seams of the top where the arches locate (you'll know which ones when you look at them), as well as the spacing from the base in the back of the top to the first arch. This will give you a "ballpark" place to start. I found that I had to move the spacing a couple of times as I fitted the top, and as the web material stretched. It's not that difficult, and the material is cheap enough that if you have to replace it a time or two, it won't break the bank.

I still have the car - buyer hasn't made the arrangements to pick it up. When I get home this evening, I'll measure for you. Will post it unless someone else beats me to it.

Hope your hood sticks are the right ones. I'm sure that will make a huge difference.

Good luck!

After getting the wrong hoodsticks off ebay, I went ahead and ordered a set from Moss, so if they are not right, at least I will be able to send them back.

Anyone need a nice powder coated set of TR4 sticks?

Glenn -

Here are the dimensions of my web straps, from front to rear:

Front bow to middle bow: 10"
Middle bow to rear bow: 8"
Rear bow to rear mounting plate: 16"

These dimensions fit the seams of my top, and it looks good.

I like it Geo where do you get all that cool stuff. You are getting good information Glenn from these guys. I would just like to add that you can let the last rib towards the back float. What I mean is you do not have to put the little sheet metal piece in with the screws on the last rib. In addition, you can let the ribbon cloth strip run wild down the trunk until you get it where you want it on first assembly and pin it to the body later. Perhaps a screw or two to hold it or some light weight tap so the ribs do not fall forward. I live in Washington and we get a lot rain. When I put my top up I open the front two ribs completely and leave last rib against the middle rib (it just floats there for now). Then I raise the horizontal side arms to a half vertical side arm position about half way up, so that the frame is setting there in a pretty much correct position, but low. Next I get the vinyl top put it on the car and snap it completely around the car-- windshield and body. Then I get in the car and rise up the arms one on each side and the same time ( watch your fingers) to there fix position which is pretty much vertical. Lastly, I grab the last rib (floating rib) and just slid it down to its natural bottom position, it will stay there. This fills in the top and it looks perfect ribs where they need to be.
When installing a new top vinyl temperature is critical and work form the center out. Find the center. Get a nice punch from a leather shop and use chalk to mark the studs. Keep things true along the front and you will achieve a kind bi reflective effect. Sp53

Glenn,
www.tjwakeman.net/TR/ has information on installing the webbing. I used that as an aid when I installed the hood and the webbing. It is also a source of other interesting and helpful information for a restoration. The bulkhead hole chart was a big help.
