TR3 - sloped vs "square" rear floor area

Hi guys - time for a history lesson. Who can fill me in on the differences between the sloped floor and the more "squared" off floor cars?

Is there any difference in floor panel fit or sills?

Why the change?

Thanks!

Changed them in later production - no idea why. Maybe the early stampers finally wore out. The shelf is certainly handier.

Change occured at the 60K switchover I believe, when everything was retooled to replace aging equipment. My guess is they looked at simpler and therefore cheaper construction options - the squared off shelf probably took less time to put together than the sloped version. Less cost too, if someone wanted to add an occassional seat.

I'm fairly certain at this point that floor panels and sills have none to only minor differences, at least on my sloped shelf car I'm hoping I won't have trouble.

As noted, the tooling was worn out; and the new tooling included numerous changes to lower costs and address some problem areas.

There are some minor differences in the floors and sills. Not terribly difficult to deal with, but be sure to get the new panels and compare them before removing the original metal. You may need to leave extra to fill any gaps, or possibly fabricate some small pieces.

Hi Randall - the sills are still on the car but the original floors are long gone so I don't have anything to compare them to. I'll just have to take extra time in fitting them and maybe start collecting lots of pictures how they are supposed to look and be fitted.

So I know I'm in for a lot of pain and suffering here, but I'm actually kind of excited to just suck it up and get it done. Any bets on how long that lasts? LOL.

This is a time consuming job. First, the scope floorpan has a flat piece added to the floorpan, whereas the flat floor (later series) ends at the shelf where it turns up to meet the trunk floor. Second, the scopeout area runs up and then turns down right in the middle of the gas tank. Third, the gas tanks are different, early cars have a step in the bottom of the gas tank, later cars (60000 plus) have a flat bottom gas tank. Fourth, the inner wheel wells have a step on early cars (which can have material added to fill the step area), later cars are straight. And there are numerious other little problems, I have changed out both trunk floors and back ends, it can be done but lots of work even if you have all the tools and equipment. Good luck, Bill C, Mesa, Az.

And if it is any consolation you are way ahead of me! All I've managed to do is borrow some Clecos from our friendly Louisiana dentist (where are you Bill?) and stare at the problem. But you getting after it is giving me more energy to get my posterior away from this computer. I think I can, I know I can, nope I'm still here!

LOL.

Hey - I connected with that local guy on the TR3. It does have some panels I need, and we found someone who needs the panels I don't. It looks like we're going to be busy cutting next weekend and I think we're all happy she'll be going to good use.
