TR2/3/3A TR3 Shifter and Motor Mount Support Ques...

Hello All

My disassembly was so long ago, I didn't recall that the gear select lever was bent. I see from Moss catalog this isn't stock for a TR3A. Any thoughts on keeping it like this or modifying back to straight up? Or obtaining another? I'm using the HVDA tranny and don't know which shifter may be more desirable.

Also, I found two types of motor mount supports in my dirty plastic baggies (see photo). Are these two different styles or does a certain type go on each side of engine?

Thanks again

Pat

He means the shift lever, although I think it might be from a TR4 or 4A. It will work in a 3A (I ran a TR4 lever for several years), but will be fairly obviously non-stock.

Since you're doing the HVDA conversion, a complete top cover won't do you any good; so you could just source a TR3 shift lever if you want. Note that they do take different shift knobs (the threads on the end are different).

The supports nearest the shift lever are correct for a 3A, I think, although most of my cars haven't had any.

Yes, the original gear shift is straight. I would think that having a bent shifter would place the knob back too far in the TR3. I don't remember two types of mount supports, only the smaller ones shown in your picture, four of them. Maybe someone fabricated those because two of the originals were lost.

Here's a pic of my shifter on an HVDA conversion.

Anyone have a picture of those mount supports in place? I've not seen them before, but I think one of my parts bins has some potential ones lurking.

Yeah, the shifter looks like a 4/4a to me as well, especially if it was chromed. Bear in mind that if you use it, you'll need a shift knob for the same as a 3A shift knob has a different thread. If you want to straighten, I'd definitely just source an original 3A one.

I don't have a photo, but it's pretty easy to "visualize." Two bolts hold the motor mount to the frame. Those same bolts also go through the holes in the support pieces, with the undrilled side of the support up against the side of the rubber on the mount plate, ummm, supporting it.

Pat, I never did like the low position of the shifter on my TR-6, so I picked up a spare on Ebay, and bent it straight about 2.5". I put it in a vice to straighten it. Not sure if you can get yours as straight as needed, but if you plan to replace it anyway, you might give it a try. (both pictures are in second gear).
