TR2/3/3A TR3 Seatbelts

My TR3 came with no seatbelts...as most did. I'd like to add them, though. Does anyone have photos, or any details, about how the belts connect?

Thanks,

John

Thanks Andrew.

I didn't see that coming! I assumed they would anchor to the frame through the floor. If I am reading the diagram correctly, it looks like they mount right to the body vertical sheet metal. Is there any special reinforcing to the body to keep them from pulling through?

This was a google search hit...

I guess I wonder if the Standard template is consistent with true safety designs. Seems I heard something about belt position needs to be on the lap more than across the gut. All this theory is way after Triumph would have published their answers.

Yes, John, mounting through the "heel board" is how I interpret those drawings. I suspect that heel board is a bit stronger than the floor pan on a TR3?

Oddly there was nothing with the original bulletin (at least my copy) about hardware, but I would assume it wouldn't be much different than what one might get today to do such an installation: quality eye bolt (or regular if preferred) and very substantial washers and such to spread the load as best that can be done. Stuff like this from Andover, whose products I have used and been happy with in the Herald:

When I did mine, I added a 2x4" square of 1/8" plate steel on the bottom instead of the large washers to add more surface area to each mount.

Excellent info. Glad I asked, as I never would have envisioned the installation that way.

Thanks!

What about the pre-60000 body?
Hard to say. At the time of the bulletin, states such as Connecticut and New York were requiring front belts or, at least in New York's case, front seat belt mountings:

NY Vehicle & Traffic Code:

§ 383. Safety belts and anchorage assemblies. 1....
2. Anchorage assemblies. No motor vehicle shall be sold or registered
in this state unless such motor vehicle is equipped with safety belt
assembly anchorages conforming to standards established by the
commissioner for each safety belt required in such motor vehicle. In
addition, no motor vehicle manufactured or assembled after June
thirtieth, nineteen hundred sixty-two shall be sold or registered in
this state unless such motor vehicle is equipped with safety belt
assembly anchorages conforming to standards established by the
commissioner for two safety belts for the front seat of such vehicle.

Andy,

I tried to register so I could change that link as well but haven't gotten my registration mail yet.
