TR2/3/3A TR3 Rad Mounting

Hi all - as you may know, I am trying to put together my car without benefit of having taken the car apart, and just boxes of unlabelled parts and fasteners. My question today concerns the rad mounting....Moss shows part number 680-675 as "packing" and quantitiy as "A/R". I assume this "packing" is some type of rubberized washer?

So, when bolting the rad down, from the top is the order as follows: bolt, flat washer, packing, then frame, then another packing, another flat wsher and then a nut? If so, does this mean I need 4 "packing" washers? The catalog doen't show it paricularly well either.

The Moss diagram is misleading, the original setup has a captive nut welded to the radiator flange and the bolt comes up from the bottom. No flat washers were used originally, just a lock washer under the bolt head and the packing washers literally "as required" in order to line up the crank hole and upper radiator hose.

However, this is a popular area for modification, as the original bolt head is rather hard to access.

Thanks Randall. So, I guess my basic question still is do I need the packing washers(which I would need to get on order. or can I use plain flat washers? Is the packing washer made out of any special material or are they just steel?
 
Originals were a rubber-coated fabric, similar to the sidewall of a tire and larger diameter than ordinary flat washers. (In fact, I once cut a bunch of them from an old tire, using a hole saw.)

But ordinary flat washers would probably work OK.
 
They had them in the TR4s as well - I think they provided some vibration dampening for the radiator, can't think of any other reason they'd be added. They are nothing fancy, just 1/16" or so rubber so you could fab them up out of something similar. I'd add them just because the factory did it.
 
When I did my 3A restoration (1990) I asked the (pre Randall) guru about rad installation. He said "Forget about the
shock absorbers; I've never had problems with bolting it down tight" (He raced TRs in the 50's.) He did say "Read my book for a fix for when you remove the rad for whatever reason" Here's Bob Shaller's shortcut:

The crank hole in the radiator needs to be directly between the crank guide in the front apron, and the crank dog on the fan extension. The packing washers were used to line it up.

If you don't care about using the hand crank; and the upper radiator hose is lined up well enough, then the packing washers aren't needed at all.
