I have Two questions about the performance cams that are on the BPNW site for TR3s.

First question, is any one running either of these cams in their TR3? I've considered getting one for my TR3 engine rebuild, my engine would be pretty much a stock rebuild. If any one running the perf. cam How is it working out for you, how is the idle and the low end torque?

Second question, BPNW lists two cams. the specs that are listed for each cam are the same: Duration 270, Intake lift .410, exhaust .400. Besides $44 what is the difference between the two?

One lists at $259($125 Core charge)
BP270 TR3-4A Cam $259($125 Core)

The other lists at $303.19(no core mentioned):
BP270 TR3-4A Cam $303.19(no core)

One's a NEW cam, and the cheaper one is re-ground. Plus, when you return the core, you get $125 back. That will bring the price down on the re-ground one to $134.

I haven't used one from them. I got mine from Ken Gillanders at British Frame & Engine. He's know TR's real well and is a welath of info. You might want to give him a call and tell him what you're looking to do. He'll advise on what's best. I don't know how much you want to spend on upgrading, but it is a slippery slope. If your aspirations aren't too high, then a mild cam, increase in compression ratio and displacement increase will do very nicely.

Edit: BTW, Ken's cams are re-ground. Send him yours, and get it back in a week or two. His prices are about $130 IIRC. Look on the website I linked to.

OOPS, I just looked myself. He's up to $150. Geez, I just got mine about two months ago and it was $130.

Rich,

I bought one of the "new" cams from Greg for my TR6 and both Bob Mason and Erik said it was top quality along with the other parts from them.

Like Ken, mentioned in Art's post, Greg has a wealth of Triumph knowledge from racing them in England years ago and he can give you a lot of advice on what to expect.

I opted for a new chilled iron cam rather than a regrind, since I wanted all new parts in my engine. These choice is a personal matter. Talk to Erik about his experiences in both versions. He also has a lot of information about varying cams for all TR's.

I've just installed the same cam that Paul (Brosky) has from BPNW for my TR6, it was new and good quality.
I wouldn't opt for the regrind, I'm always concerned about the heat treating/hardness of a regrind. A cam (and the lifters) is a hard working piece of equipment and you don't want to cut corners there.

Some 4cyl TR racers have had trouble with certain camshaft billets (mostly involving the dist. drive gear) and most are using reground camshafts. Check the FOT archives as I believe they had a lengthy conversation on the topic a few years ago.

While both surfaces are taking a beating, we found years ago that the tappets/lifters were more often the weak link. Often failures seemed more associated with a regrind and again not the cam lobe, but the lifter surface. Probably because reducing the radius puts more pressure/force on the contact point. A problem that is only enhanced unfortunately by the reduction of zinc in modern oils. So with a regrind, I would stick with the more expensive hi zinc oils.

Hi Rich,

I installed that cam in my TR4A, and have been happy with it. I made so many other mods when I put the cam in (and my old one was shot), so I can't really isolate the changes that the cam made.
