TR2/3/3A TR3 Intake Manifold - how to keep it looking good?

Hey All

I tore down my engine Friday and Saturday. That was more work that I expected. Cylinders 2 and 3 were rusty - Hoping that doesn't indicate a crack in a typical location. Head gasket looked good. Thoughts on that?

I'm going to bead blast my intake manifold. After this, any thoughts on how to keep it looking good? Clear laquer? Clear powder coat? I was concerned about the exhaust heat damaging any coating I put on the manifold.

Lots of rebuild questions (and photos, of course) to follow.

Thanks

Pat

Hard to say for certain from those photos, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the gasket was weeping in that darkened area near the center stud on the pushrod side. If not, then I'd blame the corrosion on the engine stopping with valves open on #2 and #3.

Be sure to check liner protrusion on both sides of every cylinder, before you put it back together. I recently discovered that the gasket in my TR3 had a small compression leak from #2 into the water jacket, and that the #2 liner protruded by less than .002" only on the manifold side. Pushrod side looked fine. Don't think I can take a photo of the gasket damage, it's really small and hard to notice if you aren't looking for it.

Hi Temp powder coat

Thanks Randall

What do you do if liner protrusion is inadequate? Thicker figure 8 gasket?

Good question, wish I had a good answer! The correct answer is to have the block re-machined. Thicker Fo8 gaskets will move the liners higher, but won't solve the problem of being higher on one side than the other (meaning the block deck isn't square to the liner bores).

What I did was to add a ring of soft (annealed) 20 AWG copper wire to the head gasket around each cylinder, tacked in place with soft (electrical) solder. This worked well for me with my previous engine (which had the same problem, oddly enough) and so far, seems to be working with this one.

If you buff/polish too a real smooth finish any dirt/oil will wipe right off....
