TR2/3/3A TR3 gas tanks

My first major new part purchase for my tr3 project is going to be a new gas tank.The car came with a good tank,no rust inside,a small amount on bottom outside,but appears to be from an earlier car and doesnt fit.It has bottom center outlet,my floor hole is on the far right,rubber plug on far left,and the fill hole and brackets dont line up.
An Ebay seller has steel $200,alum.$300.
I am leaning toward steel beacause of price,(not the biggest factor),and I think it may be the more vibration resistant and sturdier than the alum..
Has anybody had experience with either of these replacement tanks?

I have the steel tank from the guy on e-bay. Nicely made, fit well.
 
And I have the aluminum one -- ditto.

Hi Tom - I spoke with Jorge (the ebay guy) about the difference. To him the big advantage to aluminum is because of the widespread use of ethanol gas blends - rust will form quickly inside an unlined steel tank due to its water content. At least that was his pitch. Made sense to me. I went aluminum.

Hi Jody - Don't leave me hanging! I can still return it! What should I be checking for?
 
Give it a good pressure test and ensure that there are no leaks, especially along the seams.

And on the JH tanks (I think they've got it fixed now) the tolerances around the fuel sender weren't the greatest resulting in gas leaks into the trunk.

They are good about fixing stuff, but I believe that you have to pay to ship it back to them, which isn't cheap.

If I had to make the decision again, I would make the same decision. And belive me, it's nice being able to pick it up with two fingers and not be worrying about rust. :smile: The tank it replaced wasn't so much of a tank as a colandar.

I have one of the aluminum tanks. fits fine, and no leaks. I replaced the steel tank which had been coated with epoxy. The epoxy was flaking off and would plug the exit whenever the gas level got low.

One thing on the aluminum tank. It has very thin walls. It holds gas and you don't need much more than that
!

The steel tank doesnthave any coating,or treatment on the inside?
I would think they would rust on the shelf.

My original tank didn't have any coating on the inside and it was still sound after 45 years. I only changed it because I put on a post 60k body, and the older style tank wouldn't fit.
