TR2/3/3A TR3 Fuel Sender From Moss

I've been running into a problem with my fuel gauge since I finished the restoration. I'd fill it up, it would read full, but as the tank level started to drop, it seemed that the last half of the tank just dropped rather suddenly. When it registered empty, I still had about 3"-4" inches of fuel in the tank. Last Saturday, I added another 2 gallons, and the gauge just barely moved from the empty position. My memory banks clicked in, and I remember that the sender I bought from Moss looked different then the original, but at the time the original was stowed away, so I didn't physically compare the two...I should have.

I took the Moss unit out, and the difference is quite dramatic. See the pic below...I bought one from e-bay that looked much more like the original, the guy even cited the original fuel sender part number...that's the one in the middle, with the Moss unit on the left, and the original on the right.

The one from e-bay isn't perfect. The mounting holes are a little off, so I had to drill them out to a slightly larger size to get them to line up. Also, the holes are offset compared to the original by 30 degrees, but as long as you aim the arm towards the back of the tank, it's OK.

With the e-bay unit in there, the tank reads almost 1/4 full...which is about right for the amount of gas in there.

One thing for sure, it's always a challenge...

I have one too. I can't remember how much, but I recall it being cheaper than Moss or TRF. He's always got one for sale, he has plenty of 'em.

he's not a fly-by-nighter either. When the float on mine sank, a replacement was quickly and cheerfully sent out.

It was a "buy it now"...the cost was $47...shipping and handling another $5...Moss gets $66 just for their unit which isn't right for the application.

Do you think the TR6 sending unit is just as funky?

Ok here is a question.

I have in my mind that the sending unit and guages in a TR3 are "paired". I recall that certain senders need a certain # guage....Any truth to that?

AFAIK, all TR3/A/B came with the same gauge. The SPC shows a sender change shortly after the TR3 was introduced, which perhaps was more accurate with the smaller tank; but no matching gauge change.

The important thing is to not try to mix TR3 and TR4 components. They look similar, but work backwards. A TR2-3 reads full for high resistance, a TR4-6 reads empty. And vice versa.

I also bought a TR3A fuel sender from Moss, but it appears to be just like the original. It reaches nearly to the bottom of the tank. I haven't put any gas in it yet, but "start up" is in sight, so I guess I'll find out if it works right! But now I know another thing to look for while sorting it out.
