I'm into the engine now. Machine shop says flywheel may have been already lightened. It weighs 20 pounds with ring gear attached. Does anyone know what stock flywheel weighs? Sorry, I don't have a picture of the flywheel but can go down to the shop and get one, if necessary.

Don't have it locked in, but yes, I think that is lightened. Nornally I think they run 25+ pounds, and with lightening you can get down to around 18-19 at most.

BTW, Joe Alexander (ARE) sometimes has steel flywheels (machined from billet, not cut down originals) in either 10# for racing or 14# for street. Not shown on his website https://www.the-vintage-racer.com/ but I have some and they are works of art.
 
ISTR that "stock" weight was 31 lbs. and can be lightened by (no to) 10 lbs or less.

Joe told me his flywheels were a one time deal but if there's enough interest, maybe he would do another run. I'm in for one.

Looks like I don't need to cut any more off this flywheel. I'll post a photo when I get back to the shop.

I sold an early TR3 (pre-50,000) flywheel to one of the forum members, and weighed it before shipping and it came in at 22 lbs. This flywheel was NOT lightened. I weighed it was on a bathroom scale, but I don't see how it could have varied more then a couple of pounds.
 
Does anyone have a photo of the inner face of the flywheel (where it connects to crankshaft) that I could compare to my flywheel? Is an early TR3 (TS35000). I haven't gone home and looked at the Triumph Repair Manual or the TR3 restoration books yet so there might be something in there. I also have another motor off site that I suppose I could visit and pull that flywheel and inspect.

"The Triumph flywheels are all a good grade of cast iron. They are easy to lighten in a lathe. All can be reduced by about 4 pounds without any difficulty. Most of the weight is taken from the outside and on the cylinder block side of the part. ... There are two flywheels for the TR3 and TR4. They appear the same, but the older models weigh 21 pounds while the later parts weigh 31 pounds."

He goes on to recommend using the earlier (lighter) part and lighten it by another 4 pounds. Use high-strength bolts.
