TR2/3/3A TR3 flywheel markings

Unlike other animal markings, the ones on my flywheel are stamped. One looks like an I and, 180 degrees across, is another that looks like an arrow. Which is supposed to be TDC?

Two more X's were just added when the machine shop balanced the pressure plate with it to indicate where the matching X on the pressure plate lines up during assembly. They removed about 5 lbs. It now weighs 14.5 lbs. They also redrilled and taped it for the TR6 pressure plate.

The party continues.

-Oh never mind. I see the dowell in the crank will allow the flywheel to fit only one way, so the arrow will be up at TDC, and the I down.

Only slightly off topic and hopefully not a hijack of Tex's question, a month or so ago, I posted on the issue of weight of flywheels and how much material to remove. My flywheel (had press on starter ring) weighed about 23 pounds. The machine shop didn't want to remove much (OK, nothing) from it. I just removed a flywheel from later TR3 engine with bolt on starter ring and it weighed in at 29 pounds. 14 pounds sounds like the lower end for lightening aflywheel.

Thoughts? What has worked for others as far as how much meat to shave off one of these?

Hi Pat - I don't have the images handy but there is a guide complete with diagram on where to remove weight from the 3/4a flywheel floating around. I ended up have just 4 pounds removed from mine to be conservative, consensus seems to be 8 pounds off is the limit but DOUBLE check since this needs to be done properly.

This is what I have. No warranty on this diagram but I received it from a friend.
If someone has another guide/diagram, please post.

That's the same diagram Herman sent me and I dropped off at the machinist. According to the diagram, 8-9 lbs can be removed, but after surfacing, redrilling and tapping (for the TR6 PP), the machinist said he wasn't able to remove that much. He only removed 5 lbs.

My flywheel is the bolt-on type, so perhaps that's the difference, tho the diagram mentions removing the retaining bolts...

The difference between Pat's photo and mine, is 5 lbs.
