TR2/3/3A TR3 Fastners

Has anyone come up with a list of fasteners for various bolt-on screw-on parts for the TR3?

When I disassembled mine it was obvious P/O had done a mix & match of whatever was available. I would like to at least attempt to be correct.

My immediate need is to know how the starter solenoid is fastened (FYI The holes in my tub are larger than the ones in my replacement solenoid). Is is screws/nuts or bolts/nuts ?

I was considering placing a rubber washer or even small gasket between the solenoid and the tub so that if ever comes loose it won't scratch the paint. Thoughts?

If anyone has a list, I would love to see it.

Thanks
Griff

Griff-

Haven't seen a great list of fasteners, but the best resource I've used before is the TR3 factory parts manual.

For the solenoid, the attachment was done with some screws (PN YJ2506), and captive nuts (FC2805).

I think there was a discussion on the solenoid either here or on some other board recently - you want the solenoid to ground to the body so I wouldn't use a washer or gasket. Once its screwed down, I've never seen one come loose anyway.

Once you have the Triumph Spare Parts Catalog, you can look up the number and what they are in this hardware listing... You will find the numbers provided by TR4nut on that list.

I want to thank Randall (TR3driver) for that link.

Edit: Here's a list of the common nuts & bolts and how to decipher the numbers from the VTR website.

But, you still need the parts catalog to look them up, so pick one of them up first and then you will be able to find out what each piece of hardware is.

Griff: This is too large to post (1.7mb) but I can send you the pdf if you pm your email address to me.

We salvaged as much of the original fasteners and misc. hardware as possible and had it re-plated. I think it gives the car a more original appearance.

Frank, that's the one I linked to (the first link) in my earlier post. It can downloaded from there.

Hard to tell from the photo: what finish did you specify when you had things replated? On the "small cars" (Herald, Spitfire, etc.) lots of bolts and such were more of a black-iron finish, but I honestly don't know what was more typical for TRs.

captive nuts (FC2805).
Not really a captive nut, but a push-in clip nut. As noted, not prone to shake loose. The 'nut' is spring steel that grips the screw and deforms slightly (also locking it into the hole) as the screw is tightened.

Shouldn't be a problem, but you might want to double-check that the clip cuts through the paint and grabs bare metal. The solenoid won't work if it's not grounded, and the ground is through the screws and clips.

I just bought (and received) 10 FC2805 @ .72 each frome TRF. TRF calls them HDW fix, nut. I would call them a plug in spire nut. I got the old ones out by whopping them from the inside of the dash. They fly great by the way. I think I got that info from Frank Angelini. Of course if I'm wrong my apologies.

Nice capture of the original Frank. Mine were so far gone almost nothing survived.

Good info on the finish of fastners in the TRA Judging and Originality Standards manual. As I recall they say that Triumph got the fastners from various sources and they were finished in what ever color they recieved them in. TRA's basic comment was not to mix the finish in the various applications.

Andy, Tink, et al: I'm not sure what finish Brian (my mechanic) specified. However, if the fastener was originally "bright" that's how it was re-plated. I recall reading that Triumph used black oxide finish for the higher tensile strength fasteners, but I don't remember where I read that.

Randy,

Thanks. I discovered that I had a copy of the PDF that you provided a link for. Where does one get the Triumph Spare Parts Catalog?

Happy Father's Day to those that it applies. I think I am getting a shutz gun and 3M wand to use for the application of waxoyl in all the hard to reach places.

Thanks
Griff

Griff-

I know there are TR3 parts manuals in pdf out there on the web, but I don't have a handy link for them. However, a reasonable web-based implementation is at www.revingtontr.com as they've scanned in the pages and use the same parts numbering for purchasing.

TRF has two versions of the Spare Parts Catalog under part number 501653.
