TR2/3/3A TR3 exhaust guide conversion Q.

Thinking about redoing a spare head for the TR3A and a question came to mind.

If I convert the exhaust guides from 3/8" to 5/16" so that I can use the later exhaust valves, would I also need to change to dual valve springs. Could I do this simply by removing the 3rd inner valve spring that's currently used on the exhausts?

I'm thinking yes, remove the inner. The two remaining outer springs would be the same used for 5/16" valves.

Mornin Peter:

I'm thinking the Ken Gillander at British Frame and Engine would be able to answer that one for you. I don't have his web address right at hand, but if you look it up on the internet you should get his phone number and be able to give him a call. Very knowledgeable and very willing to help with questions.

Good Luck, Tinkerman

No reason the springs have to be changed because you changed the valve stem diameter; I've run triple springs on 5/16" stems and it worked out fine (best TR motor I've ever owned, in fact).

But, your old springs are almost certainly 'tired', and AFAIK only the double-spring sets are supplied now. Be sure to check with your supplier as to whether the set requires a pedestal or not (the original 3-spring setup did).

Ken's phone is 626-443-0939, web site is

But I'd suggest staying away from the uprated valve springs he sells, if you're building a street motor. The seat pressure is just too high for long life (tho no doubt just what's needed for a race motor turning over 6000 rpm but lasting only a few race seasons).

I have a new set of triple springs from TT U.K. that came in a parts lot from ebay. So I hoped to use them.
