TR2/3/3A TR3 engine removal

TR folks,
Must I really remove the tranny tunnel to pull the engine and tranny? The plywood floors I installed in 1976 cover the flanges...all advice welcome except sell the car.

Afraid so, you have two big bolts at the back of the trans and then the four bolts to the drive shaft. You could take the trans mount loose from frame and unscrew the ring on the driveshaft but the real hard part would be putting it all back together.

You have to unbolt the drive shaft and the tranny mount and also unhook the speedo cable. Pretty hard to get at without removing the tunnel. The plywood has lasted a long time, but perhaps it's time to re-evaluate that 34 year old floor repair.

"The plywood floor"

Another woodworker? That's great! So, I guess the gearbox cover is only attached at the bulkhead? If you need to do this quickly, you can take a jigsaw and cut away enough to free the flanges.

I suppose one could cut away the rear end of the gearbox cover to get at those bolts... then fashion a mini-cover from sheet metal to recover & allow future access. It is already well beyond considerations of originality.

Plywood floors... trying for the MGTD look.

Seems to me that it would at least be worth a shot. The rear motor mount can be removed with the engine & tunnel still in place, by unbolting the crossmember from the frame and lifting the gearbox enough to slide the crossmember out. Seems to me that you could probably undo the driveshaft at the rear axle, then slide the engine and gearbox forward with the driveshaft still attached, enough to get access to the bolts that hold the driveshaft to the gearbox. Of course, you'll have to support it well enough to be safe working underneath.

(Actually, I know I've dropped the driveshaft without removing the engine or tunnel; but it was so long ago that I don't recall the details.)
