Hi all does anyone know what material Moss uses for the top piece on a tr3 door. The stock piece looks like a piece of one inch rubber. Or does anyone have an alternative idea, perhaps a hardware store piece or something.
Don't know what Moss supplies, but TRF supplies a very nice molded piece of what appears to be heavy foam rubber. The ends are closed though, so I'm not sure what the center of it looks like.
I used a length of garden hose on the previous car, wrapped with cotton batting from a fabric store. Worked out fine. Seems to me it was 3/4" (id) rubber; but that was a long time ago.
I used the rubber piece from Moss. It's a high density foam about an inch thick, maybe a bit more. Personally, I think it's a little too thick. I collapsed it the best I could when securing the outer leather, but would have preferred a thinner section...perhaps 3/4"-7/8". I remember having to shape the ends (narrow them down) where they met the welded-on round pieces at each end of the capping.
Edit: I just found a piece left over from Moss and it measures 1.050". A little to fat I feel. 7/8" would be a better fit.
I used the Moss steel replacement trim piece and their 1 inch round foam rubber cushioning and don't recall any problems with either one. The steel was a tight fit to the top of the door, but I considered that to be a benefit since that piece is really only held on by the two interior panel screws that screw through it on the inside. I recall having to trim down the ends of the 1 inch foam to fit the curved steel piece but also was thankful that I had more than I needed rather than less. I did my interior with 41 mil marine grade vinyl which is about twice as thick as the stuff the big three provide, but again had no major issues aside from the chrome end buttons on that top door piece. I imagine they are a tight fit even with the lower weight vinyl and they were a real bear with the 41 mil stuff. Overall though, I'm glad I went with the thicker vinyl - just feels more substantial to me.
