Is it the axle housing seal or the hub oil seal ,that when it leaks ,it leaks on to the rear brake shoes. Hope its the axle housing seal .....easier to change out.
 
Depends on whether you are getting oil or grease. If it is oil, then the inner seal is leaking. The outer seal might be leaking as well, but that won't matter so much as long as the inner is holding (and you don't put too much grease in the bearings).

In my case, the root cause turned out to be the retaining bolts going AWOL. Not sure what the story is, but there also weren't enough shims in place.
 
Yes, the previous owner had apparently had the axles out for some reason (perhaps swapped with another car) and reinstalled the 6 bolts per side without the retaining tabs. The number of shims varies quite a bit (plus they come in different thicknesses) so really checking the end float is the only way to be sure you've got the right number. With both axles installed, it should be .004" - .006" at either flange.

I had an oil leak there some years back and an 'expert' aquaintance persuaded me to replace both seals. He then demostrated how to destroy a hub with a 3-legged puller.

One replacement axle later I had both seals renewed and all was well. If I had it to do over I would have just done the inner.

I would think you will use the same shims that come out but, of course, check the end float anyway. In fact, you might see what the end float is before you R&R. .004-.006 is just about at the limit of movement I can feel when I tug on the hub.
