I don't know what happened to Don's post about the 3 but here is some more info from the Digest

Those of you that have attended a Toronto Triumph Club event probably
have met Robin and Ria Searle who drive a prestine green
TR3A. Yesterday morning on highway 400, while returning from the
club's Spring Fling event, held each year in conjuction with the
Toronto MG Club, their TR3 was clipped by a passing truck which did not stop.

The Searles' spun out of control hitting a van before winding against
a centre guard rail.

Latest unconfirmed word is Ria is out of hospital and doing well with
broken ribs and arm while Robin is out of induced coma and not
considered as critical as at first. Prognosis is better and he is
expected to survive and recover. The extent of his injuries is still unknown.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ria and Robin. Hopefully they can
pull through this ok.

The article reads that the TR3 rolled; Is that correct?

I`m just curious if the Searles` had their seatbelts on or not? Personally; I don`t like seat belts.

I knew a young man who had an Austin Healey 3000. Driving on the Garden State Parkway in NJ late / Early in the AM.

He fell asleep at the wheel and hit a telephone pole or something like that head on!

He "Was`nt" wearing seats belts and got thrown from the car. Lucky for him cause the steering column would have sheared his head off.

He only suffered minor bruises!

If you saw the Austin; You could not imagine how anyone could have survived.

This is truly a tragedy,

My prayers and thoughts for the Searles` quick recovery.

It was the cargo van they hit that rolled, out thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Bieng seatbelted in a TR-3 when it goes upside down couldn`t be a positive thing, especialy if it has no roll bar as many don`t.
My prayers and thoughts for the Searles also!
 
Having been "run off the road" in a Bugeye by an inattentive driver in a box van (with, thankfully, a much more positive result!)I can really empathise with the Searles. My thoughts and prayers are with them and I certainly hope the authorities have the right person who caused the accident and throw the book at him!!! Accidents happen, but there is absolutely NO excuse for fleeing the scene when one does!!

They should make the punishment for leaving the scene of an accident more severe than a DWI, since that's the reason a lot of guilty people leave the accident scene.

I really hope the Searles recover quickly. As far as seat belts go, when professional racers stop using them, then I will as well.</span>
 
Terrible accident - we'll keep them both in our prayers...

However, "rolled over"? WOW! It must've been in the air the entire time it was "rolling over"! Look at the 'wind wings' on that upright windshield! Not broken!!

"It" refers to the cargo van rolling over, not the TR3.

Of course, since "it" as used in this article is ambiguous, he may well be referring to the TR3!

But the lack of damage that Tony points out makes me think thr TR3 didn't roll.

Bad wreck either way.
 
The way the front and rear are smashed it looks to me more like it spun, hitting both ends, rather than rolled. I know from a similar experience that these LBCs are pretty hard to roll (I know not impossible, but difficult!). I wound up doing a couple of 360s from the right lane into the median, spinning between other cars and it was only by the grace of God that no-one else hit me or I would have been looking at similar carnage. The driver who caused my incident was not even aware that he had cut in too soon forcing me onto the soft shoulder to avoid him clipping me, causing me to spin!!! Some people are just not rear-view mirror users!!! :wall:

Yes...it was the cargo van that rolled...NOT the TR3. I'm afraid the outcome would not have been as good had the Triumph rolled.....The occupants of the cargo van were treated and released at a local hospital. The driver of the semi tractor/rig that caused the accident has been found and tickets are pending.

This accident is VERY similar to what happened to NAMGAR Chairman George Merryweather last year in his MGA on his return from the Florida Keys to Texas. He was sideswiped (at speed) by a tractor/trailer...totalled his MGA...he was uninjured other than some mild bruises.

I agree. I've had two accidents in TR's, one in a TR4, and the other in a TR6. Both cars were totaled. Both times I was wearing seat belts. I've been wearing seat belts since I first bought that TR4 back in '65. Say what you want about the guy that was saved because he got flipped from the car, but don't forget to mention all of those that were saved BECAUSE they had seat belts on. Statistics are on the side of those that buckle up.
 
Always wear your seatbelts! Besides being State-enforced Federal law. They are lifesavers.
