TR2/3/3A TR3 Crank Hole Alignment

Got the radiator recored with the crank hole and now the hole is about 3/16" to 1/4" too high. It came from the supplier to the radiator shop with the hole in place so about all the rediator guy can do (I suppose) would be make it more of a vertical rectangle.

I know it is often necessary to shim the motor mounts to achieve alignment but wondered how much shimming is reasonable?

The mounts BTW appear to be in good fettle.

I have plenty of clearance to raise the engine a 1/4" but this will, of course, make the radiator inlet higher than the thermostat outlet by what ever I do (is even now). Does that sound like a problem?

I would probably make the shims out of bar stock like this:

I suppose it could also be done opening up some big washers but that pattern more closely matches the mount and the original shims (I already have one on the p/s mount).

I would like to fix this w/o returning to the radiator shop as tomorrow is the first day of elk season and they closed to go huntin' at 3:00 this afternoon until goodness knows when.

Any advice welcome. Thanks!

Hey George,

Hoped somebody knowledgeable would speak up...but guess you just have me so far!?!

It sounds like the best course would be to undo the front mounts and (with a board under the oil pan), jack the motor to see how it looks when lifted into alignment. That should show any clearance issues so you can make a decision on whether to shim the enigne or fix the radiator (again).

The shims look good!

Best of luck,

John

The shims you have drawn look remarkably like what the OEM shims look like.
That IS the way it's done. I believe I have 2 per side on mine for, probably, not-quite 1/4" lift.
Raising the motor, relative to the radiator, by that much is no problem.

The vertical tubes in the radiator that go thru the starter hole are not even connected to the upper and lower tank. They never see any fluid so that should not be an issue. I would think that the radiator shop would have no problem making the hole a bit taller. Also the outer rim of the hole would have to be made larger.
