TR2/3/3A TR3 Carpets

One guick question. Does the carpet get glued to the tranny tunnel? And do the plugs for the dip stick and u-joint stay under neath or exposed/ O.K. two questions.

The carpet is not glued to the tunnel. It is held a bit by the hole at the top front where the black rubber hose for the battery box drain goes through the carpet. Then there are 4 snaps, two on each side down near the floor. Mine came that way in 1958 and I put new snaps in my new carpet tunnel in the same places when I was finishing my total body-off restoration in 1990. There is a cushion type of felt glued to my tunnel to absorb the sound and the heat. Originally it was tan coloured jute but I used the underlay felt in 1990 exactly as mine was when new.

The rubber plugs for my TR3A are under the carpet. Don't tell any TRA judges but both the plug for the gearbox dip-stick as well as for the front end of the driveshaft grease points had the black rubber plugs visible when I bought my early TR3A new in 1958. With them hidden under the carpet, things stay a lot cleaner.

There is one snap on the tunnel just ahead of the speedo cable exit for overdrive gearboxes and one down near the floor about half way forward. The snaps on the other side are in about the same places, about 2" up the tunnel wall from the floor.

I would add that, in my opinion, it is in any case inadvisable to glue the carpet in as someday it is going to get soaking wet and it will dry faster (and without causing rust) if you can yank it out and hang it on the line:

Of all the print and posts that I have seen over the years, that photo of the carpets on the line tells all there is to know about driving a side screen car in the rain! Only way the photo would be complete is to hang your wet pants and socks with the carpets.

Miserable while happening but makes great memories and stories. Those who have never been there just don't understand.
