Installing TRF carpet kit(black loop) today and have a question or three.

1) for the front side panels- Should the edge at door opening be flush, slightly over, or slightly shy of the metal edge?

2) I found that the hole for the handbrake appears to be off (bunches up with handbrake in place. Are most of you having to cut a slit or similar?

I am using jute (with foil on one side) under carpet.
3) Is it beneficial to do this on the above mentioned sides?

1) Can't say (67% chance I did mine 'wrong').

2) I opened up the hole quite a bit -- made a new surround trim for it and hand-sewed it in. As I recall, the shape of the material for that surround is somewhat counter-intuitive -- study the old one before destroying it. I believe I made it out of two pieces of vinyl with the seam joining them running around the inside of what will become the hole.

3) I wouldn't think there would be much advantage to insulation behind those side panels. No significant source of heat behind them (unlike the floorboards) and as for noise reduction -- it's a TR3!.

I was think of opening up the hole a bit. I think I will dig around and find the old carpet piece to clarify since as I recall it fit nicely.

Anyone else have an opinion on the placement of the front side panels (dead even with edge of metal or a bit over,or a bit shy?)

Here's how I did mine when I ordered mine in 1990 from Jim Hawkins in Whitney, England for my 1958 TR3A.

My old eyes are having a hard time discerning the precise edge.

Am I right saying that it appears the carpet panel comes out a bit proud of the edge of the sheet-metal?

In addition to the carpet, I think there is also a "fuzzy door seal", or "draught excluder" to add on the edge - at least I bought some from TRF in anticipation, and I think I see it on Don's photo.

So, does the fuzzy door seal mount under or on top of carpet?

How close should the edge of carpet be to edge of door opening????


I want to make sure I get things in proper order before the gluing starts.

I'm not speaking from experience as I've never installed, only trying to learn myself - but in the above picture, I think you can see the carpet, with binding, then the fatter fuzzy seal underneath the carpet. You dont see any painted metal edge, so my opinion is the fuzzy seal hangs slightly over the metal edge.
 
Neither of the side-wall carpets are glued. They came from the supplier in England just like my original ones and have a masonite edge about 1.5" wide all the way from the floor to the curve that ends up near the top of the door. The carpet with the edging plus the fuzzy draft excluder strip were all stapled (or glued together) to the masonite strip. There are 4 tiny #4 screws and dished washers which secure the carpet assembly up the masonite strip to the inside of the "A" post. I suppose I should add a dab of glue to keep the far top corner up against the side-wall because after the 19 years it's been there now, that upper bit of the carpet hangs towards the center of the cock-pit a bit - towards the top of the clutch pedal on the driver's side and like-wise on the RHS.

All you need to do is make sure that it all lays correctly and that it looks neat.
