TR2/3/3A TR3 Caliper

Hello all,

I ordered new crossover pipes for my rebuilt calipers from Moss and they are 10". I tried to bend them exactly like the old ones and I end up with approximately + 2" (See pic below) Anyone out there know the correct length and where I might purchase them? I have been told by MM to make these work and I really am not comfortable with all the extra pipe sticking out.

I wouldn't be comfortable with that either. I just measured the crossover pipe on a caliper I have here, and from the hex of one fitting to the hex of the other fitting, I got a tad more then 7 1/2".

If you know someone that has a flaring tool, you can have them cut the pipe down and re-flare it. I believe that the flare is some type of bubble flare, so make sure it's done the same way.

BTW, TRF shows the bridge pipe. OE part numbers are 504854 & 504853. TRF lists both of those numbers as BPF9 as supplied. Wanna bet that the "9" in that part number is the overall length...which is what the pipe most likely will come out to if you include the fittings on the ends.
 
As Art said it looks a little too long to me as well.

Regardless of length that pipe really needs to mounted with the caliper mounted on the car. Once the caliper is mounted the pipe needs to be bent following closely to the contour of the face (wheel side) of the caliper. Following the contour on the outside face of the caliper itself as possible will keep the pipe from rubbing on the inside of the wheel. Fail to bend this properly and the pipe will rub directly on the wheel cutting it. Not a good thing. The inside (engine side) of the caliper has more room for the extra length of pipe but you need to mount it to check and see if it will hit or rub on anything through-out the travel of the steering from lock to lock. You will need to be creative with the bend(s) on the way to the inside (engine side) of the caliper but it should work.
 
Sometimes I think it would be useful to have a forum or site where one could log info on parts available. Not a vendor rant (goodness knows they try and we'd be in sorry shape w/o them) but just info on what you get when you order a part (fit, quality, etc).
 
I've seen those calipers rebuilt on Ebay. Perhaps the seller can sell you the pipe with proper bends and proper lengths.
 
Apple Hydraulics sells these calipers with or without the pipes. I purchased mine with the pipes and they fit perfectly. Perhaps the guy at Apple would be willing to sell just the pipes.

Yes I was supposed to get the pipes with the calipers... They have not arrived yet and I am not holding my breath. I am going to pick up some 8" this weekend and give that a try, who knows maybe the guy I bought them from on ebay will come through with the correct ones as promised.
 
Remember, the info I gave you was 7 1/2" from the end of the hex on the fitting to the hex end of the other fitting. The fittings are maybe 3/4" long...that makes 9" total length. Eight inches total length will probably be too short. If it's 8" from hex to hex, then it should work. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

After buying several lengths of pipe and several attempts at bending, the guy who sold me the calipers finally sent the pipes, albeit two right sides but, after digging in one of my boxes I found a useable left. I put the stainless hose kit on and the EBC pads with new rotors, new cylinders, shoes, etc. and I can honestly say I have never had "good" brakes on a TR3 before now. I also replaced all the seals on the rear and front and rear bearings so I should be set for a while. Again thanks for your help!

What are EBC pads. Do you have to upgrade the calipers and rotors in order to use them? And where do you buy such things. I would love to have "good" brakes on the TR3, some day my right leg will not be as strong as it is now /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Should fit right into your existing calipers, and be kind to stock rotors.

TRF has them listed for the TR4-6, but doesn't list the TR3 variety yet. EBC has just recently added those, I believe, so TRF may have them soon. Might be worth a call to see if they can get them now.

I always wondered why people felt the TR3 brakes were inadequate ... until I finally had to replace the old pads and got some of those "asbestos-free" replacements. Now I understand !

BTW, TSi sells "Kevlar" pads that IMO are superior to the EBC ones and cheaper to boot. However, they reline your pads rather than supplying new backings, which could be a hassle. I shipped my old pads to Ted and then picked them up at a show to reduce shipping costs.

They can actually put Kevlar linings on anything, including TR3 rear brakes (yes, even 10") if you supply the shoes/backplates.
I got front & rears to put on my Stag.
 
Hey Adrio,

The EBC pads are a "high perfomance" pad also known as "greenies" I purchased mine from the Roadster Factory. I called to make sure they had the correct pads because I had previously ordered "Hawk" pads (also high performance)from Raceshoper.com. BIG mistake! They promised they would fit, they didn't and they would not pay shipping either way and charged me a restocking fee to boot! Anyway, you can get them from TRF and I really like mine so far.
