I was spiritedly driving the 3 one summer when the speedometer dial pinned to where it said Made in Enngland. I knew I wasn't going that fast....then the engine died! Pulled over and popped the hood. Turns out the coil wire had worn thru against the speedo cable and burned up. Rummaged around in the trunk for a piece of wire and was soon back on the road again.

We need to have ingeniutiy to fix these cars on the road (MacGyver) Loved that show!

My TR3 broke down on me one time but didn't require a roadside fix. The vertical link broke on the left side and sent me three wheeling into the medial strip of our local Interstate at 65mph.
Probably my most memorable ride in a TR.

I was a few miles away from home at the local shopping mall when my fan belt broke. I had a spare in the trunk but no tools. I did have a pair of my wife's nylons in the car ( don't ask) and a roll of duct tape. I wrapped the nylon around the water pump pulley and the main. Then wrapped it in duct tape. It only needed to run the water pump as it was during the day and no lights were needed. Got home no problem and more miles to spare.

My "most memorable" was a lot of years ago, almost 1000 miles from home. After several hours of freeway driving (little bit of highway hypnosis), I took an exit ramp a little too fast, only to have the car slew sideways and what felt like up on 2 wheels! Turned out the nuts for the LR splined adapter had all worked loose; and two of the studs were already broken.

Fortunately, I was able to snug the other two nuts back up, using a pipe wrench that just happened to be in the tool box (no idea why) as the flats were too far gone for a normal lug wrench. Limped gingerly (no more freeways) to my destination and had a spare half-shaft (with hub) shipped to me.

Had just finished adjusting the carbs and went for a quick ride on a warm summer evening. Had just shifted into 4th on a down hill when the steering bushing broke and sent me on a sharp turn directly into the field on the right. Limped home with steering that required both arms. Scared the **** out of me!

I once seized the pinion bearing in the diff while traveling 80(the posted limit of the day) on I35 in Oklahoma....slowed to 55 in a few seconds ..ruined my entire weekend!!

Spent the day detailing and cleaning my old Midget. Took it for quick ride leaving everything from the trunk on the grass. instead of going around the block drove with the wife down for some ice cream.
On the way home the throttle cable snapped. What todo? Nothing, I mean nothing in the car. The light bulb went off, I asked the wife for the shoelaces in her sneakers. Tied them to mine and we were off. made for a interesting ride home, pulling a string, shifting and steering.
Now I keep the shoe laces in the boot of the spit.

It wasn't that scary, it happened too fast. The "what could have been" thoughts afterwards were a bit much.
I had recently purchased the 3 from a local collection after it had sat for many years. Instead of tearing the suspension down for inspection and rebuilding, I started driving it. The grease had dried and things seized. I thought that my attempts to lubricate things had been successful. It was one of those hard lessons.

How about almost break downs.
I have a new 4 post lift and spend a ton of time underneath now just messing about.
Both of my front right disc brake attaching bolts were loose and had worked half way out.
I know I recently removed the brake to rebuild it (just that one) and probably replaced the bolts but did not torque them down. This was months ago.
There was no shimmy, brake worked fine etc.
Wonder how exciting losing the whole caliper unit would be in a wire weel...and the brake line snapping.
