TR2/3/3A tr3 bracket

Hi all does anybody know the details on that small little bracket on a tr3 that goes from the driver side bumper bolt to the steering box bracket . I am thinking that it is some kinda of insurance/ stabilizer, in case the weld breaks on the steering box bracket. I was wondering if they omitted it after they starting using the split column steering shafts.

I think they started using it later. Both my split column front ends had the little bracket. You should be able to search to find where this has been brought up before, but nobody really seems to be sure of the purpose.

I sure don't know what it's for, either, but my '59 TR3A split shaft has one too.
 
Huh I thought for sure they would have omitted it when they added some of the other steering stabilizer stuff. Well I guess I had better put one on this 61 tr3. Looking to the other post Tex-K is a good suggestion, but I am not sure how to do that. Perhaps you could give a simple explanation.

TOW HOOK EYELET. Do not really know. Removed one yesterday from a 58 TR-3 that is getting a steering rack set up.

It's a stiffening bracket, to reduce frame flex in that area during spirited driving. AFAIK it was on all TR3/A/B; but the 3A/B bracket is different and has a spacer (because the bumper bracket changed).
 
I looked at both my car and the new chassis, neither have that bracket. do you think it's something someone has just done or a proper TR part. I cannot see it in any parts manuals that I have.
 
It's a factory fitted part. Both of my TR3s had one. I wonder if they also had them on right-hand-drive cars?

I imagine the loads and stresses would be the same irrespective of L or R hand drive. Slightly odd none of my parts/service books show it but then again only one of my books shows the two steady brackets which bolt on the gearbox side of the rear engine/gearbox mount.
 
Yeah but did you check the plate drawing. On mine it does not show a bracket anything like in the earlier photo.

I just checked my `57TR3 Small Mouth (LH Drive) & That little sucker sure is there! No bracket on the (RH Side).

You folks got my curiosity up & I just had to go & look.

Nope, not in the drawing. But there are lots of parts that are only listed, not shown.

ISTR reading somewhere that it was added after production had started. Apparently the drawing was already done and they didn't bother to update it.

Sorry, I don't. But don't forget, you will also need the spacer that goes between that little bracket and the frame extension, plus the longer bolt of course.
 
Mallard called to ask for the bracket that I just took off a TR-3 that is getting a rack and pinion set up. I will look around this week end and see if I can find another couple of brackets, bolt and spacer. Bill Close, Mesa, Az.
 
Sorry, I should have stated that my first pic was after the bumper bracket had been removed. In this pic you can see the washer and spacer. I had a spare, but sent it to another BCFer already. Neither of my washers could be removed from the bolt, and the spacers appeared to have been worn to fit really well into the bumper bracket so I assume it's doing something. -Both mine were fine threaded bolts with nylock nuts.

Thanks. My bumper bracket has the longer bolt and a bunch of washers. Now I know why the washers. Sometime I guess my bracket was left off.
