TR2/3/3A TR3 Boot Gasket

I'm putting together an order and I was wondering something... Is the gasket that goes around the lip of the boot from Moss any good (from a fit standpoint- I don't care about originality) ???

Or...

Is there any locally available material that some genius has found that works in that application? I'm the tightest Scottish B*****d you'll ever meet and it would kill me to spend 23 bucks on something I could have just made on my own for 5.

Thanks

Hoot, Mon!

When I did mine, I got it from The Roadster Factory. Not much to it. It fit well, and didn't even need any adhesive. I guess if you could find the same size and shape from a generic place, it would do. But it may be a case of "stepping on a dollar to pick up a dime".

The seal is in 2 pieces for an early TR3A and is not the same after Comm. No. TS 60,000 so make sure you order the correct one.

Well my friend... you need a JC Witless catalog.

Just glancing thru the weatherstripping they offer this (for a '39 non-Ford) looks very close to the TR3 boot seal:

...but I think you need about 10' and that is just 8'.

They have about 30 various styles, some of which might work and would be long enough -- but a review of them suggests that 23 bucks for the real thing is not a bad deal.

Are you on Charles' email list for special deals and discounts. Worth getting as they offer 10% off and/or $5 shipping, etc about every month.

Thanks.

I'm not hung up on the 23 bucks but I thought I'd ask in case someone came back and said "Oh yeah... just go down to the boat store and ask for an engine compartment seal for a '98 Hallet for $.59 a foot" or some such nonsense.

I'll just get the real thing.

Aloha Jim,

I recently replaced the boot seal on my TR3. I bought a seal from Moss Motors and it matched the seal that was in my car. If the cutter rails in your car in original condition I think it will be a good fit for you.

The boot cutters in my had been previously repaired and some of sections the standing metal lips that hold the seal in place were either replaced with thicker flat stock or rusted away. In those areas where the original metal cutters were good repair the seal installed nicely. However in the repaired areas the seal did not fit well because of the repairs, not the seal. I decided to use a press on type seal with a channel that would fit over the complete lip that surrounded the cutters.

I found Soffseal on the Internet at,

https://www.soffseal.com/14%20Universal.pdf

I bought some of their part # E910 and it worked nicely. The will sell most of the seals by the foot. Service was quick.

Safety Fast,
Dave

Thanks Dave,

My lip is in perfect shape but I see where you're coming from.

$2.60 a foot puts me well past just buying it from the big three.

Actually....

I was looking at it again last night and it is in 2 peices and keeps falling off but otherwise it does a fine job. I read a little tip I found on the web about spitfire boot seals.

https://www.lbcarco.com/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=lbtech

It says to just fill the joint with some sort of black 3M weatherstipping seal, cover it with saran wrap and close the boot until it dries. I'm going to lightly tack it on the lip so it stays put and then make the joints solid like that and see how it works.

That and the new tubes I just put on the drains and I should be weather-tight.

I told you I was cheap! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
