Although it's not very clear, I think the instructions in the book mean only to disconnect the center link from the drop arm (aka Pitman arm). As noted above, this is only necessary for earlier cars where the entire steering column and box must be removed (step (d)(iii)).
On later cars, you can just remove the stator tube and disconnect the joint between the column halves. Then the upper half comes off with the body while the lower half stays with the frame.
