TR2/3/3A TR3 Body Removal

The factory manual specifies to remove the center tie rod assembly as part of the body removeal procedure. Is this step necessary? It appears that this should not be necessary. Am I missing something?

Mornin Gerry,I don't know about the early 3A's but in my post 60000 1960 3A I did not have to remove the center tie rod to remove the body that was on my car. Matter of fact I did all the disassembly and re-assembly of the front end after the body tub was off and before it went back on.

Cheers, Tinkerman

Hi Gerry- Similar thoughts to Tinkerman - Those instructions may be for early cars with the long steering column. For later split column cars it isn't necessary.

Only small gotcha I had is make sure fuel line clips aren't still attached to the body at the rear, that was the only place where I hadn't disconnected everything properly.

Like Randy said, only thing I can think of is the one piece steering box has to come out before lifting the body off an early car. Thats connected to the tie rod.

Although it's not very clear, I think the instructions in the book mean only to disconnect the center link from the drop arm (aka Pitman arm). As noted above, this is only necessary for earlier cars where the entire steering column and box must be removed (step (d)(iii)).

On later cars, you can just remove the stator tube and disconnect the joint between the column halves. Then the upper half comes off with the body while the lower half stays with the frame.
