tr3 blinker

Hi all I am hooking the lights up after a ground up restoration on a tr3 and having trouble with the passenger side blinker. Neither the front nor the back work on the passenger side, but the driver side works fine with the yellow light flashing. If I unplug the green and white wire right as it comes out of the column and then turn the passenger blink on an ohm meter goes to short, but only when I turn the blinker on. There is no short in GW if I check it with the blinker switch off as the wire come out of the column. I cannot figure out why the control head only shorts when I click to the right why not the left also. I would think the GW would read short all the time. Am I not just moving the hot on and off?

Re: tr3 blinker

Steve - So you have power in ,but nothing out on that side?

Re: tr3 blinker

I must be misunderstanding you, Steve. The GW wire should only be connected to the green (or sometimes light green with a tracer) when the lever is in the right turn position. It should be open in center or left turn.

Basically, power (from the flasher) comes in on the green wire, and gets connected to either the right or left turn signals through either the GW or GR wires respectively.

Re: tr3 blinker

Just my thoughts...If you had the control head free of the car, look to see if the three wires on the bottom are in the right order ( the fourth is the horn push and is pretty self evident ). Also that they have not moved on the terminal post. The little tab on the wire end going into the hole next to it's respective post is to keep the wires from shifting over and touching one of the others. Then look to see if the wire connector is bare metal and touching the top of the stator tube swivel.

I've been working on control heads this month,
good luck

Re: tr3 blinker

Oh, and another possible issue... In the mechanism the contact slider erodes the side of the contact. Which as you probably saw is the top of the terminal post. If you disassemble the thing it is possible to turn the post and reinsert it. It is a six sided bolt-head of sorts. That gives the slider a new spot to make electrical contact.

Re: tr3 blinker

To be able to use the same wiring harness for LHD and for RHD TRs, Triumph designed it as follows. The power wire for the RH blinker light has one wire coming out the front end of the harness near the horn on the rhight side going into the bayonet conector. There are two wires coming out. The metal inside of this bayonet connector has both tubes touching each other. One of these wires continues straight out forward to flash the RH blinker light. The 2nd wire out of that connector is facing back towards - and into - the wiring harness for use on RHD cars and that 2nd wire goes over to the LHS of the car.

Re: tr3 blinker

Thanks everyone for your notes they have been very helpful. Yes it if difficult for me to convey my meaning; it was late and I was struggling. I figured the problem was GW shorted or broken in the stator tube because I had a heck of time getting the wiring in there. I unplugged the WG as it comes out of the stator to check for voltage as I moved the switch to the right and had no voltage. I thought i had it---So I pulled the control head and stator tube out and removed the back piece from the head unit. That gave me access to little brass bolts. I then check GW for continuity and I had it, so next I put the ohm meter on the back of the head and touched the center stud and the right stud plus moved the switch to the right and had continuity. To me that means this thing should work. Perhaps I joined the wires back together as I took everything apart. This is very frustrating. I am about ready to buy everything new from Maceys. I remember PeterK sawing the wires drop right through the tube.

I guess I should take the front of the head apart to see if there is something brokeGGGGRRRRRR

Re: tr3 blinker

Steve,
I don't know where you are on your restoration but up there in
high humidity WA, is it possible that your problem lies in the
lamp end of your circuit? It doesn't take much to have an incomplete
circuit because of a bad ground or a corroded connector.
1. Try switching the GW GR wires in the engine bay connector. Does the
passenger side now work and the driver's side not??
2. If you are far enough along to have the engine running and the
generator on line, start it up , bring the RPMs up to 2000 and try
the turn signals again. If they both work, (one better than the other)
the problem lies somewhere in the lamp end of the circuit.
