TR2/3/3A TR3 Battery Size

Hi All

Really simple question for the collective. What size battery (form factor) fits well in the TR3? I'm just going for a simple lead acid battery for now.
For extra credit, what size fits well in a TR-250? (may be a trick question?). I need to purchase both.

Group 27 was the original size in the TR3, although a lot of guys use the smaller group 24.

Here's a chart with the different sizes. You can just measure the battery well in each car to see what fits.

I use the same battery in both the TR3 and the TR6, so I assume you could do the same for the 250. My thought is, I will never be driving both at the same time, so why have two batteries? There are a lot of different sizes and different ratings you can consider, but be sure the positive/negative terminals are where you want them to be. I went with what was available at the local parts store.

Typical Group 24 in a TR3A. About 1 1/4" of space on each side, I have wood blocks in there to keep it from sliding.

A Group 27 would fill the space better, but I went with what I could get at W*Mart.

George who did you get the caps from, and do they push in or screw in?

I got those particular caps from a battery recycling shop but that was a few years ago -- hard to find caps on discarded batteries now not to mention the rarity of neighborhood battery recyclers.

On other batteries I have picked up caps on eBay though you have to look awhile to find some that are reasonably priced. If they say 'Mopar' on them or they are correct for a Corvette you can forget about it.

Most recently I got a set that were for Harley batteries: these.

I had to grind down the threaded portion to make them into push-on caps and (in the case of those Harley caps) had to add a vent hole.

The batteries are so prominent in our cars (and never more so than in a TR) that it seems a shame to have to look at an overtly modern unit, yet I drive the car enough that I prefer an economical and readily available battery from that big W store.

Obviously I have more time than sense.

+1 on the group 24 battery. I've had good luck with batteries from Costco.

Thanks George on the information for the caps. I looked on ebay and saw a set of Mopar caps for only $135.00, what a deal, to bad the battery wasn't under them.

Sure. Here it is on the Mt Lemmon Hwy (it's first appearance with all body parts installed):

I am still first and foremost a TR guy -- but the E-Type presents a somewhat different technical challenge and very enjoyable ride.

"W" store ditto here for group 24. They stocked them with posts either front or back. No fancy caps on mine, I just pulled off all the stickers.

Enzo never mentioned it being a "somewhat different technical challenge."
