TR2/3/3A tr3 battery corrosion

This is what I have been taught in my sales training on battery maintenance.
The corrosion that you see is caused by expansion/contraction caused by ambient temperature or from the heating of the battery itself. The plastic case does not expand or contract at the same rate as the lead post, allowing vapors to escape.
The felt rings that have been mentioned are treated to neutralize this escaping acid vapor.
If you spray the terminals with a battery protectant in conjunction with the felt rings, it should keep the terminals clean for the driving season. You will still want to check them periodically.
I'm not certain that petroleum jelly is the best way to go. It may not be conductive and cause a small loss of electrical flow.

Never tried it myself, but I don't see any reason you couldn't convert to the 3-bobbin Lucas RB340 regulator (as used on Spitfire, Vitesse and probably GT6) if you really want to keep the Lucas generator. The box is a different shape (lower and wider), but the connections are the same. Unfortunately they use the flat-blade 'Lucar' connectors (like the post 60K TR3).

Not sure that's any better than an alternator (which would potentially let you keep the original control box), but it's a possible alternative.

Some clever person with more time than I have might also be able to come up with some sort of electronic circuit that would fit inside the original control box and improve voltage regulation.
 
Optima batteries are the corrision/rust solution. Swapt it out for a show but don't run your motor in a "real" show car with the CONVENTIONAL lead acid battery. Don't leave the CONVENTIONAL lead acid battery in your car for extended periods of time even if it is not a show car. Conventional lead batteries expell gas; oder is not the main problem, rust/corrosion is the problem. Conventional batteries produce gas as a normal operation. Optima batteries "Will not off-gas in normal operation, eliminating fumes, odor & corrosion".
