A little help, want to replace my TR250 coil with a high perf. coil. Do I get one with or without a ballast resistor?

gjh:
I don't have the answer;I don't see a resistor on my stock '74 TR6 coil but it could have been modified before I got the car.

Gary,
The Lucas Sport Coil is the perfect replacement coil upgrade for your car. Don't try to use the external resistor that might be there now (just remove it) and run a wire from the fuse box (white) to the + side of coil. Just bypass the wiring harness. The negative side goes to the distributor. I am sure that this wire is hot with ignition on. Don't fuse it. Now you can open the gap on your plugs. Dwell at 35.

Check the Vintage Triumph Registry, Thay have the information you want. That said, I bought a new coil for my TR6 when I converted to Petronix ignition. I bought a Non-Balasted coil and by-passed the resistor as per the instructions I found at the VTR web page. They have alot of tech tips that are very helpfull.https://www.vtr.org/maintain/ballast.shtml

Vic Brit also sells Bosch coils that will do the job. These may be a little more reliable than the Lucas ones (I have replaced almost all my ignition components with Bosch since being let down by a near-new Lucas rotor arm). "Blue" and "Red" I think - one being with a balast resistor, one without. For your TR250 you need the one without (unless the wiring has been modified).

thanks guys, as usall, plenty of reading mat'l to review!
