TR2/3/3A tr2 muffler clamp

I noticed as I am prepping the tr2 frame that the center muffler clamp must be something I have not seen. There is only one hole around the area where the muffle fits. Would anyone out there have a picture of the original bracket? I cannot seem to find any information other that they are not available.

Post #42 in here has a pic:

If I remember, is uses rubber bushings around bolts on each side of the tunnel to isolate the bracket.

Yes that is what I thought at first, but my frame only has one hole drilled for it. I found that Rimmer brother has a picture of the early Bracket, but the part is not available. I could drill another hole in the frame and use a tr3 bracket or maybe a tr4. I did want to keep it original, and I could make one --kind of-- out of an old tr3 bracket I have. The original clamp was probably not working too well and that is why they change it.

Interesting. PN4 looks similar to what I have, but the horizontal bar crosses all the way across. In your set-up you would get vertical support, but it would have no side to side support. The header pipe is solid mounted to the engine, and comes all the way down to that bracket. I had to heat my header and bend it slightly to get it centered in the cruciform. If you get the header pipe centered, then that support would not move very much. If it is off, then the more support you have at the clamp, the better. I guess, when I think about it, if the header is off, then even the best clamp is not going to hold it in position. Take you time to line up the pipes and I think any of the clamp supports will work, even what you have.

So, you have to decide if you want to keep it original or change to a later clamp support system. Only the very hard-core buffs would ever know, as the only sign outside of the cruciform are the bolt heads!

From what I can tell you probably have part# 12 in the upper photo for the main bracket that is what is commonly used later. In the lower picture part #10 appears to be the elusive tr2 bracket. This would match the single hole that is drilled in my frame.

My thoughts are the part# 12 would be superior because it bolts to the frame twice and would suspend the bracket better in the center. I am going to call TRF and see if they might have one.

The picture that Rimmer brothers show has the rear and the center clamp together, I think. This makes it difficult to separate the two brackets.

In the Rimmer part breakdown above, mine is a little different from both of those shown. In the illustration above, the whole clamp is supported by a single strap, which would only support vertical movement. It's interesting as you watch the evolution of the support for that clamp. pt#10 must have been first...then pt#12 was an attempt to beef it up.

On my car, TS52xx, there are grommets going through the frame on each side, and no strap. Mine was apparently the next iteration, giving the clamp side to side support.

Steve,
I ran into the same thing with my early 56, no hole in the frame on the motor/tranny side. I put the rubber washers on that side with an "elevator bolt" to hold them to the bracket. The outside had a hole in the frame and bolted nicely as per parts diagrams. The thing is wedged in so tight it doesn't rattle an more. I just couldn't bore a hole through the frame (probably couldn't have with everything in place anyway).
Good luck,
Jim

I dug through my old parts and learned more about the parts for the tr2/earlytr3 muffler clamp that I could not figure out. There is an extra hole drilled into the lower trans section to hold a vertical strap. That way there is only one hole in the frame and an extra hole in the mount to hold a rubber vertical hanger.
