Seeing that the lockheed rear axle is a hot topic right now, can anyone give me some pictures or more info on the brake shoe springs and wheel cylinder for a 9" system. I know that the hand brake levers changed at some point but I'd love to see a comparison of the two types so I can figure out where to find the correct ones. I am also having a terrible time finding the proper brake shoe springs, everyone keeps trying to sell the 10" springs as correct, anyone have any info on this, I'd love a picture of the proper springs so I know what to look for.

All I can offer is what the SPC says. The levers changed when the drum went to 10"; but supposedly the return springs did not.

TRF has the early levers listed as available to order, although the status shows "CWE" and I forget what that means offhand. Might mean they only have used ones.

I think CWE means something like Cease When Exhausted. In other words after it sells out there will be no more. Of course, I may be imagining things, and the website is not much help.

I ran into your problem a few months ago. The replacement wheel cylinders around have 2 different length handbrake arms. There is a statement somewhere on the TRF sight that either will work, but you must have the same length on both sides...so no mixing and matching.

My 9 inch brakes came with 2 different style springs. I ordered a couple sets, but as you noticed, they were too long. I wound up re-using the originals in the end. The correct springs are extremely difficult to stretch during assembly, so I suppose you know you have the correct ones when that is the case. I looked for pictures, but don't have any decent ones. Here are some that relate...

You can just make out the upper spring in this one. It has a straight run in the center to avoid scraping the cylinder.

An original brake shoe design. There are many variations...I had to return 2 orders when they were mis-advertised by both ebay sellers AND one of the big three. They are getting hard to find. TRF still has them, but even they sent one 9 and one 10 inch.

The original style handbrake lever.

The new handbrake lever...about 1/4" shorter than the original.

Oh, worth mentioning...the handbrake levers can be swapped from your original cylinders to the new. Mine were too corroded to re-use, but something to consider.

This photo is not my car, but I think these are the 9 inters [Edit: Those were Girling, not Lockheed.

Unfortunately, those are Girling.

Oops! Sorry. Randall, thanks for catching that. I saw this photo from a prior thread which described it as a 9 inch, and I assumed it was Lockheed. It is so clean! I should have just used a picture of my own car but I did't have it handy.

No worries, easy mistake to make. I thought I had a an actual photo from someone else's restoration, but I guess it got lost in a hard drive crash.

Working on my Lockheed axle right now. Here are pictures of mine. Cheers, Mike

Your rears have the anti-rattle springs. Mine don't even have a hole to take them...interesting...

I was going to make mention of that. I think those are the third or fourth generation of the lockheed brake. I have TS3445, I do not even have the grease retaining cups welded in to mine. It looks like the springs used Mike's car are what everyone is selling to fit the early brakes, sad news, they don't.

There were no anti rattle springs om my car originally but the backing plate had spot for them so I decided to add. Springs came in boxes with car. I believe I tried to order some new sprvings from TRF, and one length was available at the time but the other was not. Cheers, Mike

This will be the first car I've had without those springs. I guess the return springs being on the back of the shoes should draw them against the back plate...but I'm curious to find out if they will scrape the drum or not. I thought about adding them too, but like I said, the backplates don't have holes. Guess I'll find out next year....
