Tr Toyota 5 speed upgrade

You use an 82-85 Celica or Supra box on either conversion. Check your local auto breaking/salvage yard and you also see them on ebay as they are a popular unit for conversions.

Ok, back to the original thread...whatever system you choose I'd def. drop the collar/original driveshaft option and go with the solid custom driveshaft. Safer and better balanced. Money well spent in my case.

Tinman, you can also use the Toyota 5 speed truck trannies from those years but they are not alloy cased like the Celica/Supra cases and weigh a bit more.

The truck gearboxes are from a 2WD pickup with the 22RE engine, all the way up through 1994 ISTR. I have one sitting in my shop. The case is all aluminum but there is a steel band bewtween the front and rear 1/2's of the case whereas my Supra boxes have an aluminum band. Here a comparison photo from wayback - black band is from a truck.

I am considering the toyota conversion for next fall. Whice tranny (year, make, model) do you use?
Dan

Dan,
Here's the ones that Herman recommends with his conversion. A fellow in 6-Pack also discovered that these will also work but you'll need to swap out a stock Toyota part.

I have no doubt that others can make a great conversion but I went with Herman's for the simple fact that it was a complete kit requiring no modifications to anything on the car. It's a drop in fit that you pay for and is completely reversible because you don't modify anything. I also love the feel of the hydraulic clutch. For me it was the right decision.

Dan,
....just for clarification, you don't modify anything on the car and it's totally reversible on Bill's kit also. You do need a donor TR3/6 bell housing though, you could pick uo a non op box cheap and use that and still have your own tranny for posterity.
Herman makes a fantastic kit and was forward thinking in his application. Bill makes a great kit too and they both perform the same function of allowing a 5th gear.
Hermans is very factory looking and Bills looks nice but not as sanitary per se.
The big dif for me, and the reason Bill made the kit was the difference of $1200.
BTW, the other reason I like it was it's very cool when someone gets an idea (yea, I can make that)and you make it work. If you look at a lot of the stuff Kastner did when modifying TR's it was that same kind of 'cobbled look' that went like stink and everybody copied.
