tr Radio antennas

I went to the stereo shop to buy a quality antenna for my tr and the choices were too much. I want a good antenna, but I do not want to buy something I do not need or understand. I guess they can order a universal one that is amplified? 80.00? It would be small and unbreakable. I want something that will pull a good channel in, but what does that take? I am ignorant about this stuff and the people that help there are too fast of talkers for me. Has the technology today created an antenna that is worth the money?

It might depend somewhat on the radio you'll be using. Oddly enough, I found that a classic "generic" telescoping antenna worked best on my Herald after trying a more modern version of same (shorter, plastic feeling stalk, etc.) with very poor results. But this is with a period Bendix AM/FM "Triumph" radio, so....

I'll also vote for the classic telescoping antenna, preferably one that goes all the way down. That will be more than adequate with either a modern radio or a period-correct one.

IMO antenna amplifiers are mostly a way to partially make up for lousy antenna design (which allows the antenna to be smaller, hidden, etc).

Re: tr Radio antennae

x3 on the old-style antenna that disappears completely when retracted. Much better appearance, less prone to damage and if you ever have to use a car cover you'll not have to poke a hole in it for the aerial.

Please don't get one of those rubber ones that flop about.

Re: tr Radio antennae

I agree with the telescoping antenna.

In the 60's the singles bars seemed to attract customers that liked to break off antennas. I put antennas that had a heavy coil spring at the base and never had any trouble even though I often parked at the front door to one of the favorite hang outs. At high speeds the spring antenna on my GT6 would lay back so it was next to the passenger side window.

But I also think the telescoping antenna would be better.

Re: tr Radio antennae

I've been looking at the more modern "shark fin" antennae of the sort you'll find on BMW's and the like. I'm considering putting one at the rear of the roof, just in front/center of the rear hatch.

Re: tr Radio antennae

I love the the manual telescopic one VB sells. It's cheap, and I can set it at a height which makes it looks appropriate and almost factory looking (if you could get it from the factory)

It is an antenna  I like quality audio and just dropped several pennies on my Blaupunkt system for the TR8.

I used an Autozone power antenna that I wired in. It was $20. Perfect signal.

A regular pull out unit would treat you just fine.

These fast talking guys can drive you nuts.

Short story: I built my home theater when HD first came out. I have a Sim2 projector & high end Denon / Polk / McIntosh / etc gear.

The audio "gurus" said I needed a $200 antenna for HD over the air. I never did tell them, but my research suggested other wise. I bought a $15 omni directional antenna from True Value  Looks perfect on my 104" screen.

In your case, it is just an antenna....for Am/FM audio...in a car...with a fabric top....save the money on the antenna and spend it on some better speakers.

Oh...and to answer the direct question:

No new technology that is worth it in an antenna for a car IMHO. Boosters, HD radio, etc....all BS.

My antenna was 9 bucks.

Most eletronic sellers are out for your money. Thats why Best Buy try so hard to sell you their gold platted wires. They suckered my mom into buying some cables for her new receiver, they wouldnt plug into anything. I get my HDMI cables from mcmelectronics.com. Theyre like $60 at Bestbuy, $20 at Walmart, and $7 at MCM. Bestbuy wont price match because 1) they dont honor online sales, and 2) they dont sell the brand. I dont think these are any brand actually. They just come in a clear bag
