Why do most of those cars have no rear license plates ?

I think they do... 1956 Florida license plates were dark and they didn't use a lot of numbers (unlike modern plates):

Did anyone notice the '57 Ford in the lower right foreground that parked so close to the Dodge/Chrysler that the D/C driver couldn't open the driver's door? And here I thought that was a recent development. Sadly, it looks like that stuff has been going on forever.
