The TR Manual lists the dummy mainshaft as "essential" to rebuild the overdrive. However, as I recall, it can be done by just aligning by eye, or using a long screwdriver. Isn't that correct?

I had the luxury of a dummy mainshaft until my JB Weld broke on the perfectly matched key I'd made. Re-gluing with any accuracy would require that for alignment I remove the planet assembly I just installed with a the brake ring sealed. I'd like not to do that, and plan to just eyeball it with a screwdriver if that is good enough.

Not unless your eyes are a whole lot better than mine are. The splines have to be aligned to within a few .001", and they are down a small hole.

But what I have done in the distant past (before I got a spare mainshaft) was to use the existing mainshaft as the dummy shaft, to get the splines lined up before mating the two housings. Then be careful to keep the direct drive clutch engaged (by tilting the OD tail down) at all times until you are done assembling. It doesn't matter if the output shaft turns, as long as the clutch remains engaged.

Or, something I've never tried but might work: Use air pressure to engage the OD clutch while mating the splines. That way, once the mainshaft engages the first set of splines, you can turn the output shaft to move the second set of splines relative to the input shaft. Although normally it takes quite a bit of pressure to engage the OD; most of that is to overcome the return springs and those won't be fully compressed yet when you are mating the splines.
 
The first time I did an OD I didn't have a spare mainshaft and used the long screw driver method. As I recall it took me a week of Saturdays to get it aligned. Tough job. I do recall being very happy when it all went together that last time. Never again.
