TR6 TR-6 running poorly. Points?

Hi All. I have a 74 TR-6 that I run points in. Have had a problem lately with the points. Can't get enough gap, dwell angle. The car runs but has as much acceleration as a Chinese rickshaw with a one legged operator. Any one els have that problem? Seems the adjustment hole doesn't allow for enough movement. The breaker plate also seems to have some play in it. Any suggestions? Or should I just chuck them and go Pertronix? Thanks,Perry

It sounds like you have a worn-out dist. I doubt if this can be helped by the Petronix.Start with a good one/rebuilt. Then worry about high tech stuff when its running right.

If not properly lubed the breaker plate can wear excessively, and might be the problem....I'd start there as that would be the cheapest fix. If that doesn't work, it's probably so far out that even the Pertronix probably won't help. The easy decision here is to have it rebuilt for $120 versus throwing $90 at the Pertronix. Go here:

gbtr6, just a thought, do you have a high output coil of the American high performance kind. I have seem these melt the plastic on points where you end up with no adjustment. A Lucas Sport Coil will solve that problem.

Perry,
I remember having that sort of problem a long time ago with my TR4. I used a small round file to lengthen the adjustment slot in the points. But play in the breaker plate could be a different problem. Maybe you could disassemble the plates and find the problem.

What brand of points is it? Maybe they made the plastic part a little short.

I have to agree with Ned and the others supporting Jeff at Advanced Distributors. Here is what he did to several of mine. My car never ran as well before as it did after I had him rebuild and recurve my distributor(s).

The first page shows what he does.

The second shows the adjustable that I recently had done. One full turn of the wheel gives about a degree and a half of advance or retard. Saves getting out a wrench to tweak for better or poorer gas quality and performance after getting it "just about right" in the garage.

Good luck....

I also had Jeff do mine similar to Paul's with the adjustable thumb wheel and extra plate with points set. Mine only had about 46k miles but the age also indicated to me that it would be a good idea to have a professional go through it. Jeff did not find any real wear but he did find a hole in the diaphragm. He cleaned it, replaced the bushings and other parts and added the thumb wheel. He also reset the curve.

It just did not make sense to me to try and tweak the distributor settings to accommodate years of wear and still be running with less than optimal performance.

Running correctly will mean more miles per gallon, more range per tankful, and more cash in my pocket.

Thanks to all who replied. I guess I need to take a closer look at the whole distributor. Thanks<

Perry, something bugs me about this statement. I've yet to see such a problem in a Lucas distributor, which makes me wonder if it might be as simple as a bad set of points. Assuming I'm understanding your statement, I've yet to have a set of points I couldn't gap WAY over the recommended .015" gap! So before you try all the expensive fixes recommended, try the cheap one: another set of points. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Good point Andy. I somehow thought that had been tried, but I may have confused this with another similar post.

The simplest options are usually the best and tend to work most of the time.
